Step 3- Review your state's curriculum standards |
In a moment, you will visit a site called StateStandards.com. This site breaks down the curriculum standards of each state and lists specific skills according to subject area. A note of warning, the list of resouces available are different for each state. However, a link is provided for each area's state department, which may include up-to-date details that the site does not. |
High stakes testing no longer affects general education students alone! Students with special needs are increasingly evaluated in accordance with general state standards. As teachers, it is imperative that we take into account our state's regulations and include general standards into the daily curriculum. Let's look at how this can happen. |
When you click on your state, there is a list of subjects with sub-topics. I have found using either the Resource Guide With Core Curriculum or Learning Standards to be most helpful. |
From there you will need to choose your grade level. At this point a list of concepts specific to each subject is shown. |
Click on one of the concepts, and a specific skill that is expected to be mastered appears. Ta da! It's your standard. |
This is a good time to think about how you want to focus your lesson. A suggestion would be to choose a particular standard, and search for lessons that you think teach the outlined skills. Another option is to find a lesson you love, then come back to the standards and make sure that it addresses one or more of the specific standards in your state. |

Don't get overwhelmed! More than likely you are incorporating these standards into your teaching every day. This step simply helps you to doccument and articulate the goals of your lesson plan in the universal language of the state :-) |
