Boron
is an essential microelement present in all plants. However, in central
Anatolia (About 70% of boron reserves are in Anatolia) the boron levels of
about 48% of the soil are toxic to the major crops of the region which are
wheat and barley. In our project we have determined plants hyperaccumulating
boron. The very same plants are also growing in the soil with normal and/or
deficient levels of boron. The genetic characterization of the plants will be
performed with RAPD and/or AFLP markers. The analysis of different ecotypes
will be the first data guiding the utilization of boron-tolerant plants in
phytoremediation of boron-toxic soil of Central Anatolia.

Phytoremediation
Wheat is the staple crop
of the world. It is especially important for developing countries like Turkey.
