History
Born on 11th April 1976, David Styles originates from Detroit City. His parents
Brian and Julia Styles have had 3 children in their 35-year marriage. David has
a brother, Billy, 28, and a sister, Denise, 21, are both involved with the
wrestling business. Billy currently works in the Detroit Hardcore Wrestling
Federation as co-owner of the company and Denise works for the WWSF Media
department.
Styles was brought up in a very rough neighborhood where he would have to take
extra care of himself which lead him into the thought of a career in wrestling
as he had watched the WWF through its early years and was a big admirer of the
sport. David was first introduced into the wrestling business at a later stage
than most. He did not take to wrestling training until the age of 17 when he
enrolled in CBT Wrestling Training Academy. However, David had been fully
trained in kickboxing and was a quarterback for his college football team. A
year of training was enough to impress Jack Booker, the owner of the Detroit
Hardcore Federation, who immediately offered Styles a contract after an amateur
house event.
In early 1994, Styles made his debut in the DHWF against now very good friend
Maxximum, AKA Romeo, in a table match. Though due to this match and its
physicality saw Styles sidelined for a year as he broke his hip and had 2
operations to solve the problem.
Spring 1995 came and Styles kick started his career by making and appearance at
‘Right At Ya’ PPV where he won the Cruiserweight title from Johnny Flame in a
Hardcore Ladder match. He kept this title and critics claimed he brought flair
back to the division that had been on a downward hill. After losing the title to
Reggie Hazzard at the end of 1995 at Tuesday Night Tornado, he was soon placed
in the TV Title division where he rose to claim credibility by wining a 8 man
Hardcore Battle Royal to become the number on contender for the TV Title.
That push was halted due to the fact the current TV Titleholder then broke his
leg in a biking accident, which saw him sidelined for 7 months. By now Styles
was such a fan favorite fans demanded he be put on TV and therefore in late 1996
after another spell as Cruiserweight title holder, the DHWF management decided
the 21 year old be giving the push he and the fans had been waiting for. In
December 1996 Styles hijacked a promo by the then DHWF Hardcore champion, the
highest belt in the federation as the fed is Hardcore only rules, Just Dam God
where he attacked and then made him tap out to the now famous ‘Styles And Out’
submission move.
This lead to December’s PPV ‘XzibitionXmas’ where the most anticipated, grueling
and brutal match of ALL hardcore feds took place. Styles battled JDG for the
DHWF belt in a Hell in the Cell match with barbwire instead of steel wire.
Styles took the title that day but never has so much blood been produced in one
single match, which in fact lasted 1 and half-hours. That match however was the
realization for Styles as he saw his good personal friend JDG have to retire due
to eye wounds from the match. Styles new it was time to get out of hardcore
orientated wrestling.
His contract did not run out until 2001 as he had signed an 8-year contract with
DHWF. He kept the DHWF title for 3 years undefeated, in that time having
numerous table/ladder/hell in the cell/cage/inferno/submission matches but
always coming off successful. In that time he views of the federation changed as
he decided he would see out his contract as he would still only be 24 when it
expired. Styles wrestled in Japan for 6 month as the DHWF went through a
troublesome financial period in 1998, as the fed was sure to close down.
However, the DHWF was saved by no other than Styles’s own brother Billy Styles,
as he had become a successful cell phone company owner and bought half of the
company. Even though his brother had bought half of the DHWF he would not change
his mind about leaving. 1999 came and Styles was asked to job to Romeo for the
DHWF title. Styles accepted but, luckily in some respects, as Romeo once again
injured Styles breaking his leg as Styles lay on a table, Romeo was meant to hit
Styles in the midriff but accidentally landed further to the left and caught
Styles’s left leg.
After 7 months out, Styles should have made what would be a final comeback of
his DHWF career in July 2000. But he returned from injury only to find out that
he was being released from his contract due to the fact he had made public he
was leaving and would not sign a new contract. David and his brother Billy had
major conflict due to this but Billy said the decision came because although he
was the federation’s biggest star, they needed to free up some money and clear
some space up on the roster. Styles’s DHWF career had lasted from 1994-2000 and
is the biggest star from the DHWF in their history. The federation had just
decided to release him and not even give him a send off, which Styles thought
was due to his brother’s influence in the business, and jealously of Styles
himself.
Styles and his brother have not spoken since, however in early 2001, the DHWF
was sold for $1 on the stock market and is now owned by another good friends of
Styles, Calvin ‘The Hunter’ Burgess, who is the most famous wrestler hailing
from Detroit, until now.
Styles spent much of late 2000 and early 2001 in house events and went back out
Japan to wrestle for a month in October 1999. However, Styles decided that he
deserved a well-deserved break from December onwards and then on 31st December
2000 he was married to long-term girlfriend Vikki.
Styles was then approached by the DHWF again to return for one match only but
Styles had to decline as he was in contract talks with the ECSWF. He agreed and
signed a 5-year contract to join the ECWSF in March 2001 but they made it clear
that he was not needed until May 2001 because of current storylines. Although
this was not how Styles had imagined joining a new federation he went along and
worked Indy events until May. However there was a lot of conflicting as the
ECSWF President then said he would not be letting Styles into the federation for
another month which provoked a Styles to question the federation he had joined.
June came and Styles was set to be introduced by would not go straight into the
main event which angered Styles as he had just come from the DHWF as their
champion and was know being made to job to fairly unknown lightweights. The
final straw came when Styles was scheduled to win the ECSWF Hardcore title but
then at the last second the ECSWF officials de!
cided Styles was not ready to hold a title in the federation which prompted with
Styles to ask for clear-the-air talks with the ECSWF officials. Styles jobbed
the title match once again and then got a mutual agreement with the ECSWF to
terminate his contract and allow him to pursue his career elsewhere.
Styles was then contacted by the WWSF officials surrounding his future. They
were ready to offer him a 5-year contract and would send him straight into
storylines and the main event. Styles agreed and in July 2001 Styles debuted in
a WWSF match-defeating SwitchBlade in a 2/3 falls match up. The fan reaction to
Styles was what it was like at the DHWF before he left if even better. Styles
was then given a lot of TV time by the WWSF which ultimately ended up in him
winning the WWSF European Title in a 5 way dance.
Although it seems Styles is a relatively normal guy, his in ring abilities speak
for them self. He has been named technical, speedy, powerful, and high flyer
throughout his career and now he has the stage to show the world what he can do.
His finishers ‘The Styles And Out’, a version of the Flip and Texas Cloverleaf,
and ‘The StyleDriver’, aversion of the Dangerous Driver, are now very well known
throughout the wrestling business and are feared by his opponents. Styles’s
ambition is to one day become the WWSF Champion, but also sticks to his motto of
when his day is up, his body will tell him. This is because many critics have
claimed Styles will have to retire before his 30th birthday due to the bumps he
has taken over the years. He charisma and sense of humor all relate to him
having exceptional mic skills where he will usually push his opponent to the
limits with certain comments.
