Star Wars Scripts

'Episode I' Scripts

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace HTML 161Kb ZIP File 60Kb

Just the one draft of the Episode I script for the time being. Having scanned through it, this seems to be the same version as that on sale in several formats in bookstores. We don't know which draft this is in terms of how many came before it, but its pretty close to the final filmed version. Some sections of dialogue are slightly different and all the cutscenes are in there: Obi-Wan emerging from the lake in the swamp, Anakin fighting Greedo etc. We're looking for earlier versions of the Episode I script but as yet haven't turned anything up - please e-mail us if you can help!

The Star Wars - Rough Draft HTML 194Kb ZIP File 69Kb
The Adventures Of The Starkiller - 2nd Draft HTML 162Kb ZIP File 60Kb
The Star Wars: From The Adventures Of Luke Starkiller - 3rd Draft HTML 151Kb ZIP File 55Kb
STAR WARS: Episode IV - A New Hope - Revised 4th Draft PDF File 224Kb Text File 201Kb ZIP File 70Kb

We now have almost all of the scripts for the movie that started it all in 1977. The scripts drafts date all the way back to 1973 though, and reading through them gives a fascinating insight into how the story and characters gradually evolved. Of course, we'd still like to get our hands on the remaining scripts (all by George Lucas):

- The Star Wars - First Draft, July 1974
- The Adventures of Luke Starkiller - Story synopsis, May 1st 1975
- Fourth Draft - 1st January 1976

'The Empire Strikes Back' Scripts

Still only two scripts here at the moment - we're finding the others very hard to come by. As you will find out upon downloading the file, the "3rd Draft" may in actual fact be either the 2nd, 3rd or 4th draft, we're not 100% sure! The other script is essentially the revised fifth draft plus any additions that came in during filming: for example, Han's reply of "I know" when Leia tells him that she loves him was improvised by Harrison Ford on the set. So at the moment we are / could be missing the following Empire scripts:

- Star Wars Sequel - by Leigh Brackett, February 23rd 1978, 1st Draft
- Second Draft - by George Lucas, April 1978
- Revised Second Draft - by George Lucas, April 1978
- Third Draft - by George Lucas, April 1978
- Fourth Draft - by Lawrence Kasdan, October 24th 1978
- Fifth Draft - by Lawrence Kasdan, February 20th 1979

'Return of the Jedi' Scripts

Return Of The Jedi - 3rd Draft HTML 168Kb ZIP File 59Kb

Even fewer scripts in this section I'm afraid, just the one. Again, there's some confusion over exactly which version of the script it is, due to a glaring error right at the start claiming the script's date to be December 1982. Hmm, 5 months before release? I don't think so. Reads pretty much like the movie to me, although it does feature Obi-Wan's extended dialogue in the Dagobah scenes when he explains the childhood separation of Luke and Leia. Quite interesting, and well worth checking out. If you know where we can get the following scripts from, please let us know:

- 1st Draft: "Revenge Of The Jedi" - by George Lucas, February 20th 1981
- Rough Draft: "Revenge Of The Jedi" - by George Lucas, February 24th 1981
- Second Draft: "Revenge Of The Jedi" - screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, September 21st 1981
- Revised Second Draft: "Return Of The Jedi" - screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, Nov. 1st 1981
- Revised Second Draft: "Return Of The Jedi" - screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, Nov. 11th 1981
- Star Wars, Episode IV: Return Of The Jedi - screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas, December 1st 1981, Third Draft
