SHE'S GONE RECORDS INTERVIEW

She's Gone Records is a super cool label out of Denton, TX / Warren, PA. They just released their first 7" record: DARLINGTON "Texas Punk Rock Sweethearts". It is operated jointly between Chad Gone and Jessa Cryptic. Check 'em out. SHE'S GONE RECORDS.

1)How did you two (Chad and Jessa) meet and why did you decide to start SHE'S GONE RECORDS?

Jessa: I OCCASIONALLY SET UP PUNK ROCK SHOWS IN WARREN, PA. IN THE WINTER OF 1999, I REQUESTED THAT "DIRT BIKE ANNIE" RESERVE A SPOT ON THEIR UPCOMING SUMMER TOUR TO PLAY "MUTANT POP FEST '99" IN WARREN (AN EVENT THAT DIDN'T PAN OUT UNTIL ANDY PEABODY TOOK CHARGE IN 2000). DIRT BIKE ADAM REPLIED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE, SAYING THAT ANOTHER BAND WOULD BE ACCOMPANYING THEM ON THEIR TOUR..."THE GRAND PRIXX" OF MASSACHUSETTS. ABOUT TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE SHOW, SOMETHING HAPPENED & THE GRAND PRIXX WEREN'T ABLE TO PLAY WITH DBA IN WARREN. HOWEVER, ANOTHER BAND--"THE WALLYS"--WAS ABLE TO FILL IN. CHAD WAS BASS PLAYER FOR THE WALLYS AT THE TIME. WE HIT IT OFF FROM THE START. IT WAS A WEEKEND TO GO DOWN IN THE HISTORY BOOKS AS CHOCK FULL OF GOOD CONVERSATION AND ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC PEOPLE.

Chad: So, after I got home from tour I had an email from Jessa and I wasted no time writing her back. I guess, as they say, the rest is history; but this interview isn't about our "relationship" per se. I digress. I didn't really quit the Wallys because I didn't like to play any more, although that was part of it, but thereafter I was trying to write for a band that would include only Jessa and I. It was gonna be a recording only project called "kissyface". So, it must've been early march of last year and Jessa was down visiting me. I was real pumped to show her my songs, but she didn't really dig 'em and after a lot of thought and time, I came to realize I didnt really dig 'em either. So we were kinda fighting about playing in a band and on a road trip to Austin I just blurted out "well, I'd rather start a record label anyway." She said that'd be cool and outta boredom (driving to Austin from Denton takes four long hours) we started kicking around ideas and names. I think we had decided on "gum records", although I was set on "anthro girl" when Jessa just kinda said "she's gone records." I was half-asleep and agreed to it mostly because I wanted to go back to sleep, but I think we made the right decision with the name...people've been saying it's cool from day one, so, err, ok.

2)Are you two new to the whole "record label thing", or have you had any previous experience with putting out records?

J: I ONCE ACCIDENTALLY PUT OUT A KUNG FU MONKEYS 7" IN THE SUN. IT WARPED. I WEPT. DOES THAT COUNT? DEFER TO THE CHADSTER...

C: Back in high school I'd taken a stab at the record label biz and did ok. The label was called "cousin eddy," after cousin eddy in the national lampoon "vacation" movies. I put out a coupla third-wave ska-ish/reggae 7"ers. One did good and went oop, and I have about 1,999 of the other one. yup.

3)How do you feel about your first release, DARLINGTON "Texas Punk Rock Sweethearts" 7"?

J: A WHIPPED CREAM AND CHERRY-TOPPED SUNDAE WOULDN'T BE NICER. "SUPERSPAZZ" IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS, EVER. DARLINGTON TOTALLY ROCKS!! IT'S THE PERFECT FIRST RELEASE.

C: I'm pretty excited about it! it's really too bad Darlington decided to call it quits, because I would've really liked to work our mojo with those guys, but I guess we'll doing the mojo ourselves. Haha. basically, I can't wait to do more!!!

J: "MOJO"? AS IN NIXON?

4)I am aware that you guys have some pretty cool projects planned for the future such as records with Junior Varsity, the Huntingtons, the Wontons, and more. Are you excited about releasing these records?

C: Yeah! We're totally excited to be working with all the aforementioned bands. The Wontons should be really cool, cause it's gonna come out just in time for their super-duper east coast tour this November. We're also planning on doing something with the Remotes. I love those guys...they get me pumped like the Nobodys get me pumped.

J: THE REMOTES ARE DEFINATELY AWESOME! THEY EXUDE A FANTASTIC LIVE ENERGY, AND FEATURE EX-MEMBERS OF "GOT MILF?" (RIP). RIGHT NOW I'M MOST EXCITED ABOUT THE UPCOMING "FRED SAVAGE FANCLUB" CD. IT'S NOT PUNK ROCK. IT'S LO-FI INDIE GIRL POP, WRITTEN STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART.

5)Do you have anything else planned for the distant future, as far as promotional stuff goes (comp cd's, shirts, etc.)?

C: Jessa is learning how to screen print, so hopefully we'll get some cool t-shirts coming sometime. We're always doing buttons, though. we have a deal that if you send us a joke and your address, you get a free one. Pretty cool, right?

J: WE HANDED OUT GOBS OF "SHE'S GONE" & "DARLINGTON" PATCHES AT THE MUTANT POP FEST. HOPEFULLY THERE'LL BE SOME MORE COOL CRAPOLA TO GIVE OUT SOON. DOWN THE ROAD, WE'D LIKE TO DO POSTERS & STICKERS.

6)How did you get ahold of all the cool out of print records you have in the distro?

J: IT'S ALL CHAD'S FAULT. I BEGGED HIM NOT TO TRADE HIS RUSSIAN AMPUTEE MAILORDER BRIDES PORNO COLLECTION.

C: Great magicians never reveal their tricks. No, basically I just have friends of friends and know about some boxes of records sitting in people's closets. blah blah.

7)I heard you guys put on a pre-Mutant Pop fest show with the Remotes, the Bleeding Hearts, and some others...how did that go?

C: Maximum rock!

J: IT WAS GREAT. ALL OF THE BANDS PLAYED WELL, REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT THE PA WAS SHIT ASS COCK DOUCHEY. I DANCED WITH SUPER CHARLES (THE AMAZING PLASTIC RABBIT) THE ENTIRE TIME.

8)At the MP Fest, did Jessa sing "Dilemma" with the Peabodys like she did on the record?

J: HOO-BOY! YES, I SANG DILEMMA. BUT IT WASN'T MUCH LIKE THE MP-40 VERSION. WE HADN'T PLAYED IT SINCE THE RECORDING SESSION. SOMETHING HAPPENED ONSTAGE... ERIC PEABODY MESSED UP, I MESSED UP, IT WAS A DISASTER! FUN, NONETHELESS.

9)Aything you'd like to add?

C: I like to wipe standing up...I think I'm normal.

J: SHIT ASS COCK DOUCHE, MUDDAFUGGA. YO TENGO BURRITO EN MIS ZAPATOS. CHAD'S NOT NORMAL. THANKS GRANT!

Thanks!
