A Must

For

Polish

Genealogical

Research

Chorzempa, Rosemary A.  Korzenie Polskie - Polish Roots.  Baltimore:  Genealogical Publishing Co Inc, 1998 (reprint, original © 1993).

* This book is invaluable.  It is divided into 2 parts.

* Pt 1:  Research in America.  Chapters include: available records, research libraries, regional resources, and Polish Genealogical Societies.

* Pt 2:  Research in Poland Chapters include: history & life in Poland; Ethnic groups in Poland; Geographic & Ethnic areas of Poland; maps/gazetteers; available records from Poland (church & civil, use of LDS); Russian, German, & Austrian records along with addresses of were to write for them; surnames; Christian/first names; aids for Polish, Latin, German, and Russian languages; and a Polish Genealogical Letter-Writing Guide.

A Must

For All

Genealogy

Researchers

Shea, Jonathan D. and William F. Hoffman.  Following the Paper Trail:  A Multilingual Translation Guide.  Teaneck, NY:  Avotaynu inc., 1994 (reprint).

* This is another great genealogy book.  We are a melting pot of nations, so all of our ancestors were at one time immigrants.  Chances are if you are like my family, you no longer speak the tongue of your ancestors.  If that is the case, then you should check out this guide.

* The book is divided into four linguistic families:  Germanic, Romance, Slavic, and Other.

* Each linguistic family has an introduction that includes the history of the language along with some grammar tips.

* Language sections include:  the alphabet in print & cursive form, notes on alphabet origin, hints on pronunciation; sample documents in various formats (some hard-to-read docs have been retyped for comparison), glossary of genealogical terms, and a sampling of personal names.

* Documents used include:  family records; birth, marriage, and death records; civilian & military passports; steamship ticket; exit permit, identity card, and more.  Not every type of document is used for each language.

* The Germanic Languages:  German and Swedish

* The Romance Languages:  French, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Romanian, & Spanish.  Note:  Latin was the official language of the Catholic Church until the mid-20th century; so many church records were recorded in Latin.

* The Slavic Languages:  Czech, Polish, & Russian

* The Other Languages:  Hungarian (Magyar) and Lithuanian

Crowe, Elizabeth Powell.  Genealogy Online.  McGraw-Hill Co, 2001 (5th ed).

* The third part of the book, called ‘The Must See Online Resources,’ is the most interesting.  It includes an introduction of some of the top genealogy sites on the Web, along with information on its top features.  These include:  RootsWeb, Ancestry, Everton’s, Online Library Card Catalogs, Library of Congress & NARA, the LDS & Family Search, Genealogy Forums, international resources, and GenServ.

* There are chapters on the internet for beginners.  It includes information on Usenet, mailing lists, FTP, chat, and search engines.
