Why did I make this website?
This website grew out of two things: a research project assigned for an introductory class in Linguistics (English 202, Fall 2000, at San Diego Mesa College), and the fact that I have worked in the field of Computational Linguistics since April of 1998 and I keep getting asked the same question - "what is Computational Linguistics?"
Since the field is a relatively new one, and has immense room for growth over the next decade, I believe that it is important and useful to introduce people to the concepts and areas of research, early in their educational lives, so that they might take the opportunity to explore this area themselves.
As I stated above, I have worked within the field of CL - specifically in the areas of Information Extraction and Information Retrieval - between April of 1998 and February of 2003. I was previously employed at a large research and development company, (Science Applications International Corporation), and had the opportunity while there to co-author a few papers and documents relating specifically to IE. (IE-NE task definition, Event99 proposal, Hub-4 IE overview)
