58. George HAYNIE was born
on 16 Mar 1732 in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia. He died about
1798 in Frederick County, Virginia. George is identified in the will of his mother,
Sarah Haynie, wherein he was named an heir. It is believed that George was married
twice (Based upon the birth records of St. Stephen's Parish).
The children of George's first wife, Marget, were determined based upon birth records
and the will of Stephen Haynie. Stephen's birth is recorded in the parish records
of St. Stephens as "Stephen Haynie Son to George and Marget Haynie was born
Novem 22, 1768. Stephen's will is used to identify his brothers and sisters.
The children of George's second wife, Katherine, were determined as follows:
Griffin, William, and Richard are found in St. Stephen's Parish register "as
sons of George and Katy Haynie". In 1798, Presley and Molly were identified
as orphans of George Haynie.
George Haynie's trade was carpenter. George was apprenticed to william Eskridge to
learn the trade of joiner and carpenter as noted below:
13 February 1748/49. George Haynie Seventeen years old next March is by the Court bound to William Eskridge till he attains the age of twenty one years, the sd. Eskridge is to Learn him the Trade of a Joiner & House Carpenter and at the Expiration of his aforesaid term to pay him his freedom dues according to law.(Order Book 1743-1749, page 416)George was considered an excellent joiner and carpenter by his peers. He did work for Colonel Thomas Jones Jr., a clerk of the Northumberland County court. An itemized account of work performed for Thomas Jones Jr., between May 1761 and early 1776, includes: a dwelling house built for L65; an outside office for L3; a barn for L27; a small house "for your clerk", L3; a stable, L25; a store house, L6; a meat house, L3, 10 shillings; together with repairs to the old shoolhouse and mill. George also made four oars for the Colonel's boat, a pole for his riding chair, and six wheelbarrows for the field hands. The cost for everything came to L167, 1 shilling, and 7 pence. The school house on which George worked is still standing (1992). Pupils went to school on the first floor and the school master lived upstairs (Roger Jones Family Papers, Invoice for work done, 19 March 1776, George Haynie to Colonel Thomas Jones; on microfilm at the Library of Congress).
