OCTOBER IN THE AIR

The squirrels scurry off with nuts in cheek;
And bees take all the nectar they can find
To that old hollow tree beside the creek,
For harvest days will soon be left behind.
Pecans and ripe persimmons dot the ground
And there, between the shocks of fodder, lies
As fine a gold fruit as can be found
For jack-o-lanterns and for pumpkin pies.
And all of nature croons a pleasant tune
To lend enchantment to to the autumn scene
Illumined by the heavenly harvest moon,
With gaiety and joy for Halloween.
A feeling glorious, beyond compare --
A feeling of October in the air.

--Darlene Bowden
I know no other season
So filled with warmth and cheer
As on these bright October days
When autumntime is here.

Of all the seasons of the year
Each one with beauty blessed,
I hold to autumn's warmth and cheer -
I like October best!
Thy bounty shines in autumn confined,
And spreads a common feast for all that lives.
