EJ's Concerts 2002

Concerts

  • September 3rd, 2002: Sevendust @ the Quest - Minneapolis, attended entire concert
    • >Sevendust< is a heavy metal band for those of you that might not know. The truth is I don't really enjoy their type of music, but they have a few songs where you can understand the words on the first try. Those songs are actually pretty good, but most of their music is way to heavy for my taste. I'll give them a kudos for rocking hard though and not totally losing my attention. I didn't leave not just because my girlfriend was there on the floor, but the music was actually OK. Warning, they do scream about half of their lyrics. A lot of beers didn't necessarily hurt their review either.

  • October 30th, 2002: G. Love and Special Sauce @ the Quest - Minneapolis, attended entire concert
    • >G. Love and Special Sauce< is a different kind of band. They are part funk, part rock, and part rap. Let me tell you this though if you know their music you would have appreciated this concert. They played all their best stuff. The booze was flowing and so was G. Love. He's hands down the best harmonica player that I have heard live. He's not long winded like that loser in Blues Traveler (wasn't he better when he was fat). My personal favorite is when Garret Dutton (i.e. G. Love) yelled out "Anybody ready for a cold beverage." They played to the audience and the encore was cool because Garret came out without his band and played some great songs, including Baby Got Sauce. I thought it was a great show.

  • November 17th, 2002: Creed @ the Xcel Center - St. Paul, attended entire concert
    • >Creed< plays a lot of songs a lot of people have heard. I'm particularly fond of a few - One, My Own Prison and My Sacrifice. I have to admit that my review of this concert was a little hazy due to a Vikings whooping of the Pack earlier in the day that I attended. The concert was good though. They had a ton of pyrotechnics that were really cool. I was on the ground level which was cool, but there were taller people in front of me and due to my state of inebriation I wasn't getting too into the music. Overall it was a good concert, but they started off with a bunch of songs I don't know, then finished with a few that I knew. I also learned that Arms Wide Open is about raising main dude's son. It actually has meaning, rather than being one of the most annoying songs they've recorded. They're encore was probably the best, they played One during the encore which is probably their best song.

  • November 22nd, 2002: Wallflowers @ The Quest - Minneapolis, attended entire concert
    • I saw >Wallflowers< for the third time at this show. I guess that would qualify me as a fan although during the second show of theirs they played at the Orpheum and I left early because of the venue not because of the act. Jacob was awesome during this show, they are perfect for the Quest. They played all the songs that I love, Sixth Avenue Heartache, One Headlight, and Three Marlenas, along with some of the stuff from their new album which is actually rather good. The show was really short unfortunately, they started playing right around 7:30pm and were done shortly after 9:00pm. I think they could have played a few more songs, but it didn't feel like a big marketing ploy and the show left me with good vibes.

  • November 25th, 2002: Counting Crows @ Northrop Auditorium, University of Minnesota - Minneapolis, attended entire concert
    • This was my second >Counting Crows< show. I saw them back in the day when they toured with the Wallflowers. For some reason, Adam Duritz was pissed about something. He slammed his microphone stand into the stage three or four times before the encore in true AC/DC style. The Crows seemed to forget that Round Here is one of their best songs and Hangin Around is one of my personal favorites, both were absent from the concert. About a third of their songs were from Hard Candy which made it seem to me they were trying to push their new stuff a little too much. Also, the Crows seem to suffer from a whatever Blues Traveler has. They take songs which are awesome (in the case of the Crows, not Blues Traveler) and add crap to them or extend them an extra five minutes with some solo keyboard or something. They did this on a couple of songs, then they played a crappy rock version of Mr. Jones. The encore which I was hoping to atleast here Round Here finally was three long winded ballads from their new album, Ouch. Also taking away from the experience was some girl with the most brain piercing scream and she was pissing off our entire group on purpose. Needless to say I fired back a little in my own way and she didn't scream like that the rest of the show.

  • December 9th, 2002: Tom Petty @ the Xcel Center - St. Paul, attended entire concert
    • >Tom Petty< pretty much rocks. I have to admit I wasn't sure what to expect. I only own one Tom Petty album and just bought that because I needed to fulfill my BMG membership agreement. I loved this show. We sat in the middle of the lower deck on the corner of the Xcel. The accoustics were awesome here and Tom was awesome. He played about 4 or 5 songs from his new album, which was about just right considering one of them is very good. Then he said he was going to dig deep and bring out some old stuff, which was exactly what he did. When he broke into Free Fallin which was like his second or third song the crowd went crazy. He hit up all his greats and sometimes I forget how many cool songs he's done. The encore was absolutely amazing he did a little blues rendition, it was almost a slow rap, then broke into finish with American Girl. He's an awesome performer and the crowd was into the concert more than any other concert I've ever been to.
