The little boy was brown except for his green-gray eyes,
brown with the flawless suntanned skin of childhood, and
grimy with sand and salt. She loved him so much her chest
ached.

They walked home from the beach laughing and holding
hands, and she forgot her loneliness.

They came back to the house to find him standing there,
waiting for them on the porch and smoking."Teena," he said
quietly. "It's been a long time.""Go inside, Fox," she said.
Fox gave the visitor a curious look before running inside
and upstairs.

Afterwards she crept into Fox's room. He was asleep, worn out
from the beach. She stroked his brown back, his sun-warmed skin.
She wanted to be strong for him, but her loneliness was
overwhelming.

For a long time she sat with him, wondering at the
new life growing within her, and feeling her strength to
resist diminish with every passing moment.
