NEWS: Cashwars. Do you like strategy games? Check out this on-line game. You go around a planet exploring for oil. With oil you find you can buy things to upgrade your abilities (better drill, defence, offence)... The twist is that you can make money by raiding other peoples bases. Every month this money is converted into US dollars and if you have enough in your account they send you a cheque! You do not put in or risk any of your own money, all cash comes from sponsors who advertise their products on the site. The game is simple but can be quite addictive (luckily they limit the number of moves you can make each day). Check it out for yourself at CashWars.
Making money on the net has become easier. This is a directory of programs where you get paid to surf the Internet. There is a description of the general ideas behind such programs and a breakdown and review of some popular ones listing basics such as income generated and conditions. Links are provided to all programs reviewed.

The the basic facts of these programs can be summarised in a number of points
The process is driven by the advertising expenditure of product/service suppliers and the need of marketing companies to increase their exposure to consumers in order to attract the services of suppliers. The process is described with reference to figure 1.
At the top are the suppliers, they want the consumers to purchase their products or services. In order for that to happen they must advertise, this includes advertising on the net. The Internet is accessed by a large group of consumers but it is impossible to target them all on a direct basis. Instead the suppliers look for a company with an Internet presence and a large volume of users. These users are potential consumers. The suppliers pay the company to present advertising to its users and this generates sales.
It is in the interests of the advertising company to have as many consumers access the advertising as possible. This can be for a number of reasons. If more people visit a web page, the owner of the page can demand a higher price from a manufacturer wishing to advertise there. The advertising company can be paid on a commission basis by the supplier for sales made through its adverts. The more popular their site is, the more people that see the advertising, the more will make a purchase, increasing revenue for the advertising company.
There are a number of ways for a company to expose a mass of people to the adverts. One is to provide a service, such as a search engine, free e-mail or a database of information. Advertising can readily be seen on these, in fact most pages which attract a significant amount of visitors include advertising. Some companies however only display advertising, instead of providing a service to attract people, they pay people money for viewing the adds. They simply take the money from the supplier and distribute a portion of it to users who view the adds (you get paid). Saying that, some programs which pay you also provide services such as search engines and a list of links you may find useful.
The pay rate differs between programs. It is usually under $1 per hour so there should be no illusions about retirement to become a professional web surfer. You can simply think of it as a way of subsidising your Internet costs. The amount is not large it is however easy money. You just supply the address where cheques are to be mailed, download the free software and let it run while online. For programs such as allAdvantage this is all that is required, the company takes care of the rest. You usually need to earn a minimum of around $15 - $40 before a cheque is sent.
It is in the companies interest to recruit as many users as possible, as a result they are willing to reward you for introducing others to the system. This typically works on a number of levels and depends on how much the people you introduce, or refer, use the system. As an hypothetical example, a company might pay you 50 cents for every hour you spend online. They also pay you 10 cents for every hour a person you refer spends online and 1 cent for every hour a user they refer spends surfing. The more people you refer, the more money you make. This can be used to make more serious money.
