Longwave Radio Dx-ing By Electronic DX and the GCC Staff
MY FAVORITE LW PORTABLES THAT DO WELL FOR ME ON LW
As you see here, this is
typical crystal set cover 150
to 400 kHz.  This radio is
like any other radio,  its the
L/C coil circuit,  you can
make one if you know the
right inductance  and capacitance.   A loop antenna
works the same way, but  it
couples to your radio instead
to improve LW or MW reception.   The only way
you are going get DX with
this, is you NEED a RF front
end, Mixer/Osc, 2 to 4 IFs and detector, and Amp.  Antenna
Required also.   r
The Grundig YB-400 PE is a great LW portable
it is much more sensitive than the DX-398, but
does not cover 353 to 519 kHz like other radios
do.  But it will receive  European broadcasts
and and also NDB like a  regular AM radio picking
your AM DX at night.  Grundig did very well on
this portable receiver!
The DX-398 is now replaced with the orginal case
called the ATS-909. This radio is a great NDB
DXers favorite from my books, cause of the
full coverage of  153 to 519 kHz , and the
seperate LSB/USB modes for easy catching.  Also
its a great longwave portable for broadcast DXing
at night and also you can tag the IDs also as well.

This radio is still one of LW favorites still today
cause of the tape recording feature you can
use for LW NDB DXing and also LW broadcast
logging.  Also it has a BFO for Single Side Band
like my old favorite below.  Also I wish
Sangean will still keep on making this one with
a tape out and in jack for external sources  such
as the minidisc.
MY OLD FAVORITES THAT DID WELL AND GO ME STARTED IN LW
This one get me really into it when I first received broadcast LW stations from Morocco, France, and also Ireland back in 1994, and also Algeria as will.   This radio was  a great performer in 1994 until we had a big snow storm that  wrecked the RF front end, and pulled it down from #1 to 4 on the GCC ratings list, also it had problems cause of the front end
and amp. Good thing it got repaired at the repair shop at Radio Shack in 1996, and I might
use it again for an extra receiver.
The DX-380 was a great radio that really got me started in LW reception, but it only lasted
cause of the problems it was having,  the RF front end is marginal after I replaced the
transistor, but it had its days, and to the GCC its decommissioned for a long while.
Longwave has been interesting this winter, with all the storms heading our way we may
have to find other solutions to keep our antennas up in the air, especially for the marine
beacon listeners.      Its time for longwave antenna spring clean up!!  You can go to Radio Shack , and get the Shortwave antenna kit, it includes insulators,  that are dark colored , and feed through window lead, also some stand off insulators. wire is also included with
it, but you can still use the proper coax connection and something to connect it properly.
Remember :  For the proper longwave radio reception , please use a ground rod, and yes for lightining , consider a lightning arrester, you radio store sell these, and they can save
your antenna, and the house.  Longwire antennas that are also used with portable radios such as the DX-398, I highly  recommend the MFJ-956 for proper selectivity.    And it will also keep the radio free from the local broadcasters in the long wave band.    Unless you live right by LW broadcasters, then thats a different story, then use a 153 to 280 kHz  Broadcast filter.   If you have a communications receiver, then you are home free, you can string up a wire that is up to  500 feet or more with the proper filtering.    VLF converters work well with longwire  antennas pretty well, still make sure the VLF converter is built right, the way the kit tells you to.      The Second thing is loop antennas, and they are  great addtition to the longwave receiver  , and they respond to the magnetic field, which gets rid of the most interference.  Thats  why there is a ferrite rod coil antenna right  inside your radio.      Interference can be a pain in the neck, cause
everyone like to use their noisy electrical items, we all need dimmers to set the mood, but
we don't need a DXer, getting upset with his AM radio reception.  When done setting
the mood, make the a DXer's mood a little happier, by turning off  the light when  leaving
the room , or before you sleep.
