Elgin Flyers 1974 to 1998

The Elgin Flyers currently have 21 members. We have 5 instructors available. Club dues are $45.00 payable every January 1st ($40.00 for seniors 60 and older). Every person that joins our club is responsible for obtaining their MAAC membership which is a requirement of our club. Our club uses the MAAC wings program where students are assigned an instructor who will teach them how to fly their airplane and when they have developed the flying skills required, can take our basic flight test and earn their "wings" . They will then be allowed to fly at the field anytime during flying hours without an instructor beside them. We fly on a "T" shaped field with the east-west runway being approx. 800 feet long and 100 feet wide. The north-south runway is approx. 400 feet long and 65 feet wide. We have a general meeting every February at one of our members' house and usually a couple at the field during the summer months.    The Elgin Flyers were formed back in 1974 with approx. 10 members flying from the Sparta Drag Strip. Later on they moved to The St.Thomas Psychiatric Hospital and flew at the back of the hospital for a short period of time. They flew in other locations on and off until 1977 when they obtained the current site we fly from now which is located on Fruit Ridge Line. We welcome anyone who wants to come down and watch the airplanes flying. We fly every Sunday morning during the spring, summer and fall months (weather permitting) as well as through the week after 6 o'clock until 9 pm. All of our members are friendly and are willing to answer any questions people might have about the hobby.     We have washroom facilities at our flying flying field with running water for washing hands etc. Our flying site is kept well groomed all summer long for ideal flying. MAAC rules are mandatory at the field. Our club rules are posted at the flying field.
