Gryis was absorbed by the Kentaurus Pact just two and a half centuries ago, right before human beings arrived in the region. Pact manufacturing facilities have been constructed on the main continent along with several military outpost, but the majority of the planets native population continues to live as they did before the Pacts arrival.
Gryis was separated from the rest of Kentauran civilization approximately a million years ago when civilization fell on all of the colonies, and the homeworld, nearly simultaneously. The fledgling colony had barely begun to settle the eastern coastline of the main continent before orbital bombardment stranded them and ruined what little manufacturing technology they had possessed.
The lowlands on the main continents eastern shore, the continent is known as Birthplace to most (its the site of their Adam & Eve story), eventually became too crowded for Kentauran comfort and some braved the calm ocean to settle the major island chain. Those who made it to the islands preferred them. The tropical Pike trees, carefully tended for villages, are much more like those in the forst of Monelbi than those found on the mainland. They stand forty meters high and have three meter long spear like branches, each bearing a single meter wide blue leaf. Branches grow only on the upper half naturally, but Kentaurans harden dead branches and insert them on the lower half of the tree to climb on. A raiding culture developed in the islands while the mainlanders became nomadic.
Today Pact technology has worked its way into the hands of raiding clans, and among machetes one may sometimes find a laser or EM weapon. The penalty for Kentaurans possessing or cultivating the Bloodvine which is native to Gryis is death. The penalty for humans, who have done nothing else wrong and are in Kentaurus Pact systems, is usually a very very heft bribe and fines. Adding other offenses to it usually ends in the death penalty.
