Smoke "grenades" NaClO3 weed killer is widely available to everyone in the UK. There are many uses for this chemical, though it is preferable to have KClO3, which you can make using J's procedure. Something I wanted to make was a smoke "grenade", and the first thing I looked at was the NaClO3/TP smoke on J's site. However, I thought that this has already been tried, so it would be more beneficial to all of us if I did my own experimenting. So far I have only done two experiments, which can be seen below. No.1 - Straight KClO3/Sugar The first formula was KClO3/sugar at a 66%/34% ratio. However, I worried that this would burn too quickly, and so I decided to make a "sludge" of the two by adding hot water to the composition. I then put this into a tube, and left it in an airing cupboard to dry out. Here is a basic drawing of the device, as you can see it is pretty small, and was just an experiment.
To ignite it, I poured some spare KClO3/sugar on top of it, and lit that. That flared nicely, and it started to smoke. However, it smoked far too slowly, much like a fumigation smoke cone. However, this was tested outside, so inside it would have seemed thicker. I believe that it would fill a small - medium room in about 1-2 minutes. It burnt for a while, maybe 3 - 4 minutes, and then it stopped. However, all that had happened was that the sugar had burnt and left a black solid which smothered the rest of the mixture and stopped it burning. However, when the tube was squashed, hot ash fell through the charred sugar to the bottom, and re-ignited the mixture. This is something to be cautious of, so when it appears to have finished burning leave it. However, although this was a cheap device to make, it didn't burn as well as required, and so another option needed to be found.
