Joe
and Maggie's form of MPS is known as MPS III or Sanfilippo
Syndrome. MPS results from the body's inability to produce a
critical enzyme needed to process mucopolysaccharides - a long
chain of sugars in our bodies.
This missing enzyme results in improper storage of
mucopolysaccharides throughout the body, especially in the
central nervous system and brain.
Although Joe and Maggie seemed normal at birth, as this
disease takes it's toll, the kids will lose their ability to
speak, walk, swallow and sleep normally.
Children with Sanfilippo Syndrome have an average life
expectancy of 14 years.
