WHAT'S NEW

  Linda & Elli's Wedding
August 27th, 1999
Bering UMC - Houston

A service of union for two women was held Aug. 27 outside Bering UMC in
Houston. Prohibited by the Social Principles from officiating or from
holding the service in the church, Marilyn Meeker-Williams, senior pastor, stood
on the church steps watching the procession. Troy Plummer, an ordained
Orthodox Catholic priest and a hired staff member of Bering UMC, officiated at the
celebration of the 25-year partnership of Linda Enger and Elli Piombino.
Meeker-Williams conducted a vespers service in the church following the
outdoor service of union.

NO! on the Knight Initiative

The Knight Initiative is dangerous and it will set a terrible precendent. Even if you do not live in CA, the effects will be far reaching if it is passed. The Religious Right is pulling out all the stops, and we must be working together to defeat it. The American Friends Service Committee has put out a brochure, "No on Knight", (posted by permission) to put up on the web. If you have a website, please link to it.

SOULFORCE JOURNEY

Follow Mel White's 17 Step Soulforce Journey to Lynchburg, VA
to meet with Jerry Falwell. Jim and I plan to be among
the 200 who meet with Rev. Falwell and his group.

UPDATE

Email to friends, family.....Thursday, October 21, 1999

Dear Friends:

Jim and I are 2 of the 200 delegates going to meet with Falwell this weekend as
described in the release below. We desire an interest in your prayers, meditations, positive energies, as we embark on this endeavor. This is serious. There are a number of groups who will be protesting - both pro-gay and anti-gay. The likes of Fred Phelps and other radical anti-gay ministries will be present to protest Falwell's willingness to meet with us. Pro-gay groups will be there to protest because they believe we are "selling out" to meet with Falwell.

We want to "stop the hatred," that's all. Maybe you agree, maybe you disagree. But we all must agree that the violence against our community must be stopped. Before that can happen, the hate speech/sermons must be curtailed. And that is only a small beginning. The local reporters that Jim and I have talked to have been very supportive and positive. However, the media will be there en masse. We have agreed to interview with reporters immediately after the meeting for our impressions.

Please wish us well and keep us in your prayers.

Evan & Jim
