| The average German shepherd's coat is of medium length. The fur is short around the ears, face, and legs with longer hairs on the body and tail. Some shepherds have very short coats, almost like a Lab's. German shepherds shed a lot, no matter how long their hair is. |

| Long coated shepherds have long hair on most of their body. There is feathering on the tail, ears, and legs. Most longcoats still have an undercoat (the soft hairs underneath the outer guard hairs that keep the dog dry and warm). |
| Plush coated German shepherds look similar to stock coated shepherds except their hair is slightly longer and thicker giving them a plush appearance. |
