Home

My 2 x great grandfather John Smith was married to Jean Thomson.  In 1851 they were living at "West Bryans Colliery" at Newbattle in Midlothian with their sons Charles, John and William and their daughters Jane and Margaret.  John, a collier, was born in Lasswade, Midlothian c.1812 to John Smith, a miner and Catherine Ross.  In 1855 he died aged 43 of "collier consumption".  His death details state he died at Arniston Engine which I assumed was his place of work but a retired Midlothian miner has told me this would probably have referred to Arniston Engine Row - a row of houses - and he would have died at home.  John is buried in Dalkeith new churchyard.  A recent trip to Dalkeith (May, 2002) did not find his grave.    Jean pre-deceased John.   Three of their other children, James, Agnes and Catherine died in infancy.

As the years go by their son William is a miner with his family in 1881 at Cockpen. Charles and John are at Newbattle with their families and have the same occupation that year.  The three sons gave their children the same family names, Jane, John, William, Charles, Margaret, Catherine,  Agnes etc.

John Smith and Jean Thomson's son John is my g/grandfather.  He eventually became an "On cost labourer" at Gorebridge in Midlothian.  He was  living there with his family in 1891.  He died in 1896 from a heart attack while working as a gardener at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh.  He and his wife Margaret Sinclair were by then living in Boswell Street in Leith.  They had six children - well I know about six of them......
