The Bartlemans Abroad | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hi. I'm Bill Irvin. Eileen and I are fourth cousins once removed. We are both descended from the same Bartlemans. Our common ancestors are Alexander Bartleman (1783-1854) and Jane Brunton (c.1789-1873). We met on the internet while researching our family trees.
Eileen asked me to do the pages for Bartlemans who have ventured abroad from Scotland. So here goes.......
There are three areas outside of Scotland where members of the Bartleman family were known to live, they are:
India North America New Zealand |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Bartlemans in India | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Archibald Bartleman (1827-1875) and Helen Mackintosh (1831-unknown).
Archibald was born in Dirleton, County Haddington (East Lothian), Scotland on October 18, 1827. He died on March 19, 1875 in Bombay, India.
Archibald's parents were Peter Bartleman (about 1803-1893) and Elizabeth Hay (about 1806-?). These two were never married, so this might be a reason that Archibald set off to make his way abroad.
In 1850 he enlisted in the Army of the Honourable East India Company for a term of 10 years. He was a Sub-Conductor in the Commissariat Department at the time of his death.
Archibald and Helen had three children in India: Alexander Bartleman (1853-1853) Ellen Jane Bartleman (1855-unknown) Francis MacKay Bartleman (1858-1920) |

Bartlemans in North America
Frank, as he was known, was born in Karachie, or Kurrachee, Lower Sindh, India on January 27, 1858.
He died on October 4, 1920 in Sandwich, Essex County, Ontario (which is now part of Windsor).
Frank was back in Scotland after his father died. He finished high school there.
He married Jane Drysdale Mackintosh in the District of St. Giles, City of Edinburgh, Scotland on March 21, 1877.

This is Frank and Jane Bartleman.
After they were married, they went to India on missionary work for the Baptist church. This was circa 1879. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
By the 1890's they were in North America. They lived in the Detroit, Michigan and Sandwich, Ontario area for most of the rest of their lives. They did live in Florida for a time in the early 1890's (having first lived in Detroit, Michigan and Sandwich, Ontario). They moved around quite a bit. Frank worked for the Michigan Central and Grand Trunk railroads with various clerical duties and traveled in that capacity quite a lot.
They had one child: Helen Jane Bartleman |

Bartlemans in New Zealand
Alexander Bartleman (abt. 1839-1903).
Alexander was the eldest son of Archibald Bartleman (1811-1885) and Marion Hogg (1817-1900).
Alexander died at age 64 on January 4, 1903 at Royal Terrace, New Zealand. He went to New Zealand from Peebles, Scotland (the date is not known).
He arrived in New Zealand about 1870. He ended his career as the manager of the Bank of New Zealand.
Alexander left "numerous family" of which nothing is known at this time.
This information came from a clipping from "The Peebleshire and County Advertiser Newspaper", dated February 28, 1903. This clipping was saved by Frank Bartleman.
