Technically, she is guilty of the charges against her. The law against endangering the life of a public official, like many laws, was passed to make it abundantly clear to all that just because someone is a public figure, it does NOT give us the right to harrass them or cause them fear in any way. Public figures are often the victims of harrassment at the very least, and sometimes death or injury at the very most. Perhaps Alina would like to be slapped in the face while SHE walked down a street? There can be no doubt in anyone's mind that 15 years in prison is far too disproportionate. Although I would not advocate such action myself, as a person who dislikes the meddling of the royal family in the politics and culture of this country, I found the incident highly amusing. Prince Charles is a public figure and as such he is aware of his figurehead status and as such he, I am sure, realises he will be subject to such events. If he were not prepared to pay such a price he could give up his position in society and be an ordinary "loyal subject" like the rest of us. The complete over-reaction of the Latvian authorities belies a sinister attitude in those trusted with authority in that country. They should indeed be grateful for the event put the visit and hence the situation in Latvia in the spot-light for a short time (in this country at least) without the flowers the visit would have been another, largely unreported, minor royal visit. Please continue to keep us up to date about what is happening.
