From the Heart

by Elvichar

Out of all the room mates he had had over the years (and he’d had a lot), Adam was his favorite. After watching those tapes with Adam and all his conquests he had started to feel an even deeper affinity with him.

How could he tell him though? ‘Hey Adam, ugly, stupid Doofer has a crush on you. Ain’t that a kick in the head?’

Even if Adam was going to start finding men attractive, Doofer could not really see how that would help him. Not looking the way he did.

The dressing up thing was inspired,. All, right, Roberta still wasn’t exactly good-looking, but compared to how he had looked, Doofer felt positively gorgeous in his new girl clothes. He could be sassy and strong, and best of all Adam listened to him when he was dressed like this. It was amazing really.

And Adina. My god, Adina was hot.

Doofer had to stop himself from drooling every time he was in the room with her.

That ass was bee-ooot-eee-ful. He couldn’t understand why she was so insecure. In a dress, Doofer felt empowered. But poor Adina did not know how sexy she was.

If Roberta had that body…

"Don’t get me started," he said aloud suddenly.

"Don’t get you started on what?" Adam looked up from the magazine he had been reading.

"Oh, nothing."

It was his fault. He hadn’t expected it to go that way. Poor Adam. Poor Adina.

All he had wanted to do was show Adina how attractive she was - she was the only one out of the three of them that was convincing enough to get away with it. Doofer had thought he was doing a good thing sending Adam in as the Trojan horse. How was he supposed to know Jimmy and him had so much in common? Both of them desperate to get into Adina’s underwear, both willing to do whatever it took.

Except Doofer would never have done what Jimmy did.

If he had known…

"Adam, man. What happened with Jimmy…"

Adam put up his hand to silence Doofer. "Nothing happened. You hear? Forget about it."

He had not realized Adina was so vulnerable - not when Adam had been so very confident.

Dave was off doing his own thing with Leah. Doofer did not really get what the girl saw in Daisy - what did Daisy have that Roberta didn’t? Didn’t make any sense. Not that Dave didn’t look good in a dress - of course he did. But to Doofer he looked like nothing more than a frat boy on a dare.

"Adina?" Doofer used his Roberta voice. "You can tell your auntie Roberta everything. I won’t breathe a word."

"Oh god," Adam started to cry. "Doofer. What has happened to us? Why do I feel this way?"

Doofer reached out to hug his friend, and although Adam stiffened slightly, he did nothing to stop the embrace.

"There there. You’re a beautiful, strong woman, Adina. You don’t have to let them hurt you."

"Doofer. .."

"Shh. Roberta. Doofer isn’t here - no bad man’s going to hurt you."

Doofer felt a little stupid saying that, but it just came out. Roberta knew what to say.

"But I’m not pretty. That’ s the point. It only happened because I’m a dog. "

"We’re all DOGs, Adina."

"No I mean I’m ugly. You and Daisy are so pretty - but look at me. Jimmy only picked me because he knew there would be no competition. I’m hideous."

"Dear god, listen to yourself. You are easily the prettiest out of the three of us, Adina. You’re almost the prettiest out of the whole sorority."

Adam laughed.

"I don’t believe you, but thank you for being kind."

"I mean it. " Roberta dragged her friend to the mirror. "Look at yourself. Really look. OK you’re maybe not the most stylish girl in the world…"

"Hey!"

"But Adina is hot, Adam. I would do her."

"Doofer!" Adam was amused, but a little shocked.

"Shit. I’m sorry Adam, that just slipped out." Roberta may be wise, but you can’t keep a good man down. Adam noticed too.

"Jeez Doofer - I think you need to work on your concealing techniques, ’cos buddy - that thing is a bit of a give away."

"Adam. I don’t know what came over me."

Adam couldn’t help but be amused by this. "You and me both, Doof."

Doofer sat on the bed. "I only wanted to make it all right, Adina."

Adam sat down next to him. "I know. I don’t blame you for what happened."

"But I know where Jimmy got his rufies from. Same place you did."

"You gave them to him?"

"Yeah, but it’s not what you think - he got them months ago. I didn’t think he was going to use them. He told me he was on an errand for you, Adam."

"Shit. That little punk... wait a minute - you thought I was going to use them?"

"Well, yeah. Jimmy told me you were having trouble with the ladies and you needed something to make things go more smoothly."

"He told you I was having trouble with the ladies? And you believed him?" He paused slightly - he had never had any trouble getting girls in bed all on his own, thank you very much. "And even if I was, you think I would do something that sleazy?" He shrieked.

"Well, to be honest, yeah. You were hardly Mr Morals, Adam."

"Adina did not deserve what happened to her." Adam did not want to anything as girly as sobbing - but Adina was going to bawl any moment now.

"No, she didn’t deserve that."

"The scary thing is, I think Adam did." Adam curled up in a ball on Roberta’s bed.

Doofer had a sudden urge to stroke Adina’s hair, so he did.

"Jimmy is a dickwad. You did not deserve what happened - whatever it was."

"I don’t remember, Roberta. I think it was bad though. I just hope Jimmy doesn’t try anything like that with anyone else."

"I think he’s in love with you, Adam"

"He’s got a warped way of showing it. Wait a minute - you think he’s in love with me - Adam. Not Adina?"

"I saw the way he used to look at you, Adam. That boy has a big crush. I know what I’m talking about here - I really do."

"Doofer?" Adam sat up. As he moved his wig got caught in Doofer’s fingers. "Ow." He reached up and took out the pins. Leaving the thing behind on the bed.

"Adam," Doofer said in his Roberta voice, "Doofer has feelings for you. He knows you’re never going to return those feelings, but let the boy down gently."

"What about Roberta? Does Roberta have feelings for Adam?" Adam decided to just play along. Obviously Doofer was yanking his chain here, but he was interested in seeing how far it would go.

"Yes Roberta likes Adam. Of course. And she likes Adina very much. And so does Doofer. "

"Perhaps we should all four of us double date some time," Adam said wryly.

"You’re beautiful, man," Doofer said. "Why can’t you see that? If I was with you, I would make you feel so special. But you don’t need me to tell you - you just need to see it yourself."

"Doofer - maybe you should be taking some of Roberta’s advise too," Adam said softly. He had changed, he realized that. Adina had changed him - this whole situation had changed him.

Doofer stood up wearily. "I’ve embarrassed myself. I think the best thing for me to do is just leave. "

Adam grabbed his arm. "No, stay. I need to be with someone who understands right now."

When Dave came in later, after a wild toe-painting session with Leah, he found the two of them asleep in each other’s arms. He thought it best just to leave them be.
