I.M.O.T.Y. 1997

INFLUENTIAL MUSIC OF THE YEAR

I.M.O.T.Y. is a yearly review of music that is personally selected because of it's sound or influence on my life in the past year. The majority of the music reviewed has been released in the last year, or at the end of the previous year, but this is not always the case. I.M.O.T.Y. is not meant to be a meter for the best songs of the year, and is merely a personal review of music that has influenced me in the last year, sharing the experiences that I've associated with the music.

UPDATED: December 26, 1997

12/26

1997 is days away from coming to an end, and so will the nominations for I.M.O.T.Y. 1997. But who other than Sean "Puffy" Combs to come through with the smash hit "The Benjamins (The Rock Remix)". But who other than Puffy to take such a hard rap song, and cross it over to a hard rock, totally punk version that's everything the original is, and a blend of styles of music you would never believe could come off as so cool... So listen to the rap, or original version, first, then listen to The Remix and get ready for rap like you've never heard it before.

11/25

Peach Union hits the List with "On My Own", a song that took 4 times to listen to before I got to hear it the whole way through. I was riding in a friend's car when I got the chance to hear the whole song, and even got the group's name. After picking the single up shortly after, I couldn't help but add it because I'm a sap for candy-like-teenie-bop music. "On My Own" is plagued with major chords and cutsie rhythms that are easy to listen to. (Kasey, I give it a 9.8, it's so easy to dance to!) Anyway, Peach Union scores with their first ever single from their new album "Audiopeach".

10/24

Another song hits the list after not being able to resit it. Crush scores with "Jellyhead" after waiting for 4 months. Finally, after hearing it by accident (on a CD at work) I decided that it was too good to pass up. Seems to be a developing pattern... Anyway, Crush definitely brings together dance-techno and excellent major chords to make a song that refuses to not be listened to. Tune in and get ready to be turned on!

10/6

I finally had admit to myself that "Trip Like Me" by The Crystal Method belonged on the list. Techno is definitely making a comeback (as you can see from the songs already on the list) and "Trip Like Me" is another that deserved to added. An electronic bass beat, and major chords that combine for a great techno sound....

This update sees three new artists added to the list with Smash Mouth, The Backstreet Boys and Sugar Ray featuring Sugar Cat. "Walkin' On The Sun" grew on me to the point where I learned to love the 60's feel that was brilliantly brought into the modern music scene with no problem. As for "Quit Playing Games" and "Fly", I got into these tunes while on vacation down in Avalon this past August. True, The Backstreet Boys score with a slow song, something rarely seen on the I.M.O.T.Y. list. But my sister's car stereo did it too much justice to not add it. And listening to the CD for the rest of the week didn't hurt either. I liked "Fly" by Sugar Ray featuring Sugar Cat before vacation, but it wasn't until I saw some kid singing it in a t-shirt store that it hit me how funky a tune it really was. So vacation hits again with some new tunes to add to the list. Check them out if you still have any summer energy.

The Beatles-wannabes, Oasis is back with their latest album Be Here Now after having their (What's The Story) Morning Glory) album make I.M.O.T.Y.'s Album Of The Year List last year. This time they score with their first release "D'You Know What I Mean?" that duplicates the catchy-melody trick that won them success last year. Major chords tinted with minor inflections and a great chorus lets Oasis once again make the Nomination List. And if that's not enough, wait until they release their album of Beatles remakes coming soon. It was only a matter of time...
