Book Distribution: The Brechin Tales

We are also proud to be able to introduce 'Hamish McMoosie' to South Africa ...

The Brechin Tales are a series of illustrated children’s stories by Terry Isaac, who lived in Brechin within sight of its cathedral and tower. The books feature Hamish McMoosie, a loveable mouse from Scotland who has already “set the heather on fire” by having his own McMoosie clan tartan registered with the Scottish Tartans’ Authority. With titles such as “Hamish and the Marvellous Set of Bagpipes” and “Hamish and the Quest for the New Spirtle” they not only entertain but also act as an introduction to Scottish culture—each tale has an accompanying Scottish recipe and a glossary of Scottish words. The book costs R80 plus postage and packing. Tf you would like to buy a copy of this delightful book send and email with “Hamish” in the subject line to: The Brechin Tales and we’ll let you know the total cost and how to pay. Alternatively you can phone Margie Maich at any of these numbers: Tel: 021 715 7943 or 072 82 41355.

We're sad to say that Terry Isaacs, the author of the Brechin Tales, died in Kenya last December.  He apparently had a premonition as he wrote the poem below a few months earlier and sent to a friend in Scotland. This poem was passed on to us by Iris Thornhill, co-author and friend of Terry Isaacs. He will be missed by all friends and readers of Hamish McMoosie and the Brechin Tales.

Terry's Poem

Where Goes my Heart?
If my body lays mouldering 'neath the Hot African soil
Where goes my heart?

It soars, with eagles, among snow topped Highland mountains

Among the green Angus Glens it meanders loath to part

High on the Struie it delights in Northern Lights cascading fountains

Along the swift flowing Spey it tumbles joyously through Moray parts

Then to Culloden, Bannockburn, Flodden and Falkirk fields shedding a tear

Remembering our past, Wallace and the Bruce and a Bonnie Prince frae a far

Perchance conversing with Burns, Sir Walter, Andrew Selkirk and Tranter too

It laments with the haunting sound of Great Pipes that rise with the curlew

And humbly looks at the Flowers of the Forest - those Flowers o' Scotland

While I lay slumbering silently in solitude 'neath a different, different land

Must I. with these few words, you convince, for are you not Scottish too?

That is where a Scot's heart should be - under Saint Andrew's sky.
