CHURCHES OF THE ST. MARY'S CORNER IN EARLIER YEARS
1811 In the summer of 1811 a small church known as "the old church" was built where the United Church now stands. The pastor was Rev Duncan Ross. He married all of the old settlers.
1818 The pastor was Rev Alexander Lewis 1838 The pastor was Rev John Campbell, who began his ministry on St. Mary's River April 15, 1838. His wife was a daughter of Rev Jas A McGregor. Rev J. Campbell moved to Sherbrooke in 1864. 1865 The pastor was Rev C.B. Pitblado
Building a new Church Benjamin McKeen, son of Isaac McKeen,Sr, Ebenezar (Nee) McKeen and Wease McDonald built this new church. (Nee McKeen was a son of Wm. L. McKeen and Christy Murray (Holy Hill) Aspen.) These men also built the covered bridge at Aspen. A flood washed that bridge away and it was later replaced by an iron bridge. The windows from the old church were used for the old Aspen School. The old school was nearer to the road than the current location of the Aspen School. At one time there was an old school at the location of where the new United Church was built.
The men started hauling the lumber for the building of the new Church in December 1874. On July 13, 1876 the new church was opened with Rev Robert Cumming as the minister. All of Geordie Mitchell's aunts and uncles sang in the choir of this church which was in the same location as where the current Presbyterian Church now stands.
The first funeral was that of Sarah A Fisher, wife of George Tate of Melrose Crossing. June 28, 1877 was the 2nd funeral, it was for Samuel Archibald,Esq., father of AG Archibald.
1875 The pastor was Rev Robert Cumming. 1884 The pastor was Rev John Ferry. 1889 The pastor was Rev Andrew Boyd 1893 The pastor was Rev John D. Mac Farlane. 1901 The pastor was Rev Alexander Sterling. 1906 The pastor was Rev William McDonald 1913 The pastor was Rev Joseph Howe Kirk until 1935.
1925 In Church Union - The Presbyterians and the United church had a lawsuit over the Union. The results were that the Presbyterians built a new church in 1925.
