Building a new Church
Benjamin McKeen, son of Isaac McKeen,Sr, Ebenezar (Nee) McKeen and Wease McDonald built this new church.  (Nee McKeen was a son of Wm. L. McKeen and Christy Murray (Holy Hill) Aspen.) These men also built the covered bridge at Aspen. A flood washed that bridge away and it was later replaced by an iron bridge.
The windows from the old church were used for the old Aspen School. The old school was nearer to the road than the current location of the Aspen School. At one time there was an old school at the location of where the new United Church was built.

The men started hauling the lumber for the building of the new Church in December 1874.
On July 13, 1876  the new church was opened with Rev Robert Cumming as the minister.
All of Geordie Mitchell's aunts and uncles sang in the choir of this church which was in the same location as where the current Presbyterian Church now stands.

The first funeral was that of Sarah A Fisher, wife of George Tate of Melrose Crossing.
June 28, 1877 was the 2nd funeral, it was for Samuel Archibald,Esq., father of AG Archibald.

REF: Walter Malloy provided some of this early Aspen Church information. Walter lived with his relative, George Mitchell.
George's ancestors had been elders in the early Aspen Church. Many of the early Church Records were retained at George Mitchell's home.)
The above information was collected by Agnes Fraser previous to 1961  and sent to me  by her daughter Elma Perry.
