Introduction 1. Salaah is one of the most important pillars of Islam. 2. The difference between a Muslim and a non-Muslim is that a Muslim performs Salaah but a non-Muslim does not. 3. The first thing mankind will be questioned about on Yaum Al-Qiyaamah (the day of judgment) will be the performance of Salaah. 4. Sincerely performed Salaah stops a person from doing wrong and evil deeds. Thus, Salaah acts as a guide to Muslims. 5. Salaah is the key to Jannah.

The Conditions Necessary For Salaah There are seven conditions of Salaah. It is Fard to abide by these conditions before performing the actual Salaah. 1. Tahaarah of the body. 2. Tahaarah of the clothes. 3. Tahaarah of the place. 4. The covering of the body (Satar). 5. Facing the Qiblah. 6. Adherence to Salaah times. 7. The making of the Niyyah (intention). TAHAARAH OF THE BODY: 1. The body should be clean of najaasah--e--Haqeeqi, impurities such as stool, urine, etc. which may be removed by means of washing. 2. The body should be free from najaasah--e--Hukmi, impurities which need Ghusl for purification. 3. Wudhu. TAHAARAH OF THE CLOTHES: The clothes should be free from all types of najaasah, e.g. stool, urine, alcohol, blood, the saliva of dogs etc. TAHAARAH OF THE PLACE: 1. One should perform Salaah at a paak (clean) place, free from all types of najaasah. 2. Salaah may be performed on any surface such as lawn, sand, tar, cement, a rug, carpet, "Musallah", etc. provided it is clean (paak). CLOTHING: 1. It is Fard for men to cover themselves from the navel to the knee while women have to cover the entire body, although their feet, palms, and faces may remain uncovered. 2. The clothes should not be tight fitting. 3. It is Sunnah for males to cover as much of the body as possible. The head should be covered with a topee or turban and the arms should not be left bare. 4. The garments should be free of pictures of living objects. 5. Short skippers which cause the back to be exposed should be avoided. 6. It is Haraam to use any garment made of pig skin. 7. Women should not wear transparent clothes through which the body or hair is visible. FACING THE QIBLAH: 1. It is obligatory to face the Qiblah when performing Salaah. 2. A person who performs Salaah in Masjid al Haraam in Makkah will face the Ka’bah itself. SALAAH TIMES: 1. Salaah should be performed during the stipulated times. 2. Salaah performed after the prescribed times is called Qadha. INTENTION: 1. The intention or Niyyah must be made prior to the Salaah. 2. It is necessary to define the number and type of rakaat and the Salaah which is being performed e.g. Waajib, Fard, Sunnah, Fajr, Zuhr, Asr etc. 3. One should not delay the Salaah once the Niyyah has been made. 4. The Niyyah may be made in any language. The Niyyah may be made mentally or recited softly.
The Six Faraa’idh Of Salaah Prostrating by placing the forehead, nose , palms, knees and toes on the ground. During Salaah, Sajdah are performed in pairs. QA’DAH AKHEERAH: 1. The sitting in Salaah after the Sajdah before the Salaam during the second or fourth rakaats or the third rakaat of Witr and Maghrib. 2. The Waajibaat Of Salaah The following are Waajib (compulsory) in Salaah: 1. Reading Suratul Faatihah. 2. Reciting a Surah, three short verses or one long verse from the Holy Qur’aan after Suratul Faatihah. 3. Performing Salaah in the correct sequence. 4. Sitting after performing the second pair of Sajdah in the Salaah which contains more than two rakaat. 5. Sitting between the two Sajdah. This sitting is called Jalsah. 6. Standing erect when coming up from Ruku’ before going into Sajdah. This is called Qawmah. 7. Reading of Tashahhud. 8. Ending the Salaah by saying Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatuallah 9. Reading of Du’aa Al-Qunoot in Salaatul Witr. 10. The performing of the entire Salaah unhurriedly. 11. For the Imaam to recite Qiraat loudly during: The first two rakaats of the Fard of Fajr, Maghrib and Esha. The two rakaats of Jumu’ah and Eid Salaah. Tarawih and Witr Salaah during Ramadhaan. 12. The Imaam has to read silently during all the rakaats of Zuhr and Asr, the third rakaat of Maghrib and the third and fourth rakaat of Esha. 13. The Sunan Of Salaah (Sunan - things said, done or liked by Rasoolukkah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) 1. Lifting the hands to the ear-lobes (or the shoulders, for girls and women) when saying Takbeer Tahreemah. 2. Placing the right hand over the left during Qiyaam. 3. Reading of Thanaa and Bismillah. 4. Saying ""Ameen"" silently after Suratul Faatihah. 5. Saying ""Allahu Akbar"" when going into Ruku and when coming up between each Sajdah. (Note: the first Allahu Akbar, Takbeer Tahreemah, is Fard.) 6. Reading tasbeeh in ruku and sajdah 7. Lifting the right forefinger when reciting the Kalimah Shahaadah in Tashahhud. 8. Reading Durood and Du’aa after Durood in the last rakaat. 9. Sitting in the prescribed manner. 10. Turning the face to the right when saying ‘Assalaamu Alaikum’, and then doing the same to the left, at the end of the Salaah. Note: By performing the various Sunan of Salaah, the full benefits of Salaah will be obtained, Insha Allah. If a Sunnah is left out it will not break the Salaah, nor will Sajdatus Sahw be necessary, but it will lessen the benefits and blessings of the Salaah." THE SUNAN OF TAKBEER--E--TAHREEMAH 1. It is Sunnah for males to lift the hands up to the ears and for females to lift the hands upto the shoulders, while saying "Allahu Akbar." 2. The fingers should be kept relaxed with the palms facing Qiblah. 3. Males, after lifting the hands to the ears, place them below the navel with the right hand over the left. 4. Females place the hands on the chest, with the right hand over the left. THE SUNAN OF QIYAAM 1. Stand with the feet parallel to one another with a gap of about 10cm--15cm between the feet. 2. The body should be erect with the head lowered and the eyes focused on the spot where the forehead will rest when in Sajdah. THE SUNAN OF QIRAAT 1. To recite Thanaa 2. The reciting of Ta’wwuz 3. The reciting of Tasmiyah 4. The reciting of Bismillah at the start of every rakaat. 5. The saying of "Ameen" after Surah Faatihah 6. The reciting of Ta’wwuz, Tasmiyah, Ameen and Tahmeed softly. 7. The first rakaat of the Fard of Fajr should be longer than the second. 8. The reciting of Surah Faatihah in the third and fourth rakaats of Zuhr, Asr, Esha and the third of Maghrib. See the tab "What must be read" for more on the Arabic. THE SUNAN OF RUKU 1. The reciting of the Takbeer when going into Ruku. 2. The reciting of the Tasbeeh thrice. 3. The holding of the knees firmly. The fingers of the males to be open when holding the knees, and those of the females closed. 4. The legs should be straight and erect. 5. The back should be in line with the head. 6. The reciting of the Tasmee when getting up from Ruku and the reciting of the Tahmeed while in Qawmah. SUNAN OF SAJDAH 1. When going into Sajdah, allow the knees to touch the ground first, then the hands, the nose and finally the forehead. 2. When getting up from Sajdah, the forehead is lifted first, then the nose, next the hands, and finally the knees. In other words, the process is reversed. 3. When in Sajdah the palms of the hands should be placed on the ground with the fingers closed and facing the Qiblah. The forehead should rest between the hands. 4. The reciting of Takbeer when going into Sajdah. 5. The reciting of Takbeer when getting up from Sajdah. 6. The reciting of Tasbeeh thrice while in Sajdah. 7. While in Sajdah, males should ensure that the stomach does not rest on the thighs while the forearms should not rest on the floor. 8. Females should keep the thighs close to the stomach to observe hijaab. The forearms should be flat on the floor and close to the body. SUNAN OF QA’DAH AND JALSAH 1. Males should sit on the left foot by placing it flat on the ground and the right foot up with the toes facing the Qiblah. 2. Females should sit on their left rear, extending both the feet out to the right. 3. Place the palms of both hands on the thighs above the knees. 4. When reciting Tashahhud, lift the index finger on reaching the "Laa" of "Ashhadu anlaa ilaha", fold the rest of the fingers into a ball and lower the index finger on reaching "illallahu". 5. Recite Durood - e - Ibraheem and the Du’aa - e - Ma’thoorah. SUNAN OF SALAAM 1. It is Sunnah to say the words "Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah" when making Salaam at the end of every set of rakaat. 2. When making Salaam, the face should be turned first to the right, then to the left. 3. When turning the face to the right and left, during Jama’ah Salaah, the intention of greeting the Musallees, the Imaam and the angels on either side should be made. 4. A Munfarid (one who performs Salaah by himself) should make the intention of greeting the angels on both sides. Copied from "Al-Ustaadh"
Times of Salaah 1. Fajr: the early morning Salaah, performed after dawn but before sunrise. 2. Zuhr: the midday Salaah, performed after the sun has passed its Zenith (Zawaal--its highest point). 3. Asr: the late afternoon Salaah to be performed before sunset ( but not while the sun is actually setting). 4. Maghrib: the evening Salaah performed immediately after the sun has set. 5. Factors Which Break Salaah Factors which render Salaah Faasid (invalid) 1. Salaah becomes invalid (not acceptable): 2. When one’s Wudhu breaks during Salaah. 3. When one loses one’s senses in Salaah or becomes insane or faints. 4. When one’s chest is turned away intentionally from the Qiblah. 5. When one leaves out any Fard of Salaah. 6. When one leaves out a Waajib action intentionally. 7. When one talks or replies to a Salaam or replies to a sneezing person, or laughs loudly while in Salaah. 8. When one recites the Qur’aan incorrectly. 9. When one cries out in pain or utters sounds caused by pain. 10. When one eats or drinks during Salaah. 11. To move about in Salaah without reason. 12. The performance of any action which creates the impression that the Musallee is not in Salaah, renders the Salaah invalid. The Mustahabbaat Of Salaah (Mustahabbaat - An act which if done is rewarded, but if not performed, there is no sin) 1. While in the position of Qiyaam, the eyes should rest on the Sajdah position. 2. The eyes should be focused on the feet during Ruku’. 3. In Sajdah the eyes should be focused downwards on the nose. 4. In Qa’dah the eyes should be focused on the thighs, or knees. 5. When making Salaam, the eyes should be focused on the shoulders. 6. Unnecessary coughing should be avoided. 7. Yawning should be suppressed. 8. Makrooh Acts in Salaah (Makrooh: An act which is disliked but not forbidden) Salaah becomes Makrooh when one indulges in any of the following actions: 1. The scratching of the body unnecessarily. 2. Fidgeting with one’s clothes. 3. The closing of the eyes through tiredness. 4. The omission of any Sunnah deliberately. 5. Making the second rakaat longer than the first. 6. Reciting the surahs in the wrong order e.g. to read Surah "Quraish" in the first rakaat and Surah "Feel" in the second. 7. The omission of the Surah following the one that has been read is not permissible, at least two or more Surahs after the one that has been read should be omitted. 8. Performing Salaah while there is an urge to go to toilet, or when hungry or when food is ready to be consumed. Copied from "Al-Ustaadh"
