29.10.02 John May Have Played His Last Game For Latics |
John Sheridan may be forced to hang up his boots after fading from the picture at Boundary Park. John (38) is fit enough to appear for the senior side and would love to keep showing his passing skills for one last season. Time now seems to be up on his glittering playing career, and a disappointed John admitted, "It looks like I've played my last game." John, who began the campaign as a first choice, has suffered long term knee problems and actually wanted to retire when he was injured again in February. He was talked out if by Mick Wadsworth, yet now finds himself restricted to a watching brief as a part-time coach. John said, "My knee hasn't been right since I joined the club, but it feels okay and I'm training nearly every day. I still feel I can do a job in the first team, but Iain Dowie decides who plays and I can see where he is coming from. We have spoken about my situation and I completely understand that he needs to look to the future, which is what he has been doing with the younger lads. I decided to give it another go because this is the last season of my contract, but it's frustrating not to be in the side when you are reaching the end of your career. The team is professional and very fit these days, which is what the gaffer wants from his players, and you can see the results, but, even in my younger days, I was never someone who went charging around the pitch. My game is about keeping the ball. You have to face facts by accepting the end will come some time, and Iain has been good by trying to get me on the coaching side. I really appreciate that, but hopefully he'll think my experience will still come in usefull. This is my 20th season as a professional, most of them spent in first teams, so I should probably just call it a day and be satisfied with what I've achieved. I can't grumble if don't play again, because I've had a great career." |
