Emmanuel Emmaus Community Servants

I would like to thank each member personally for the support and service you gave to this year’s Emmaus Walks. I was blessed with the opportunity to serve as the Community Lay Director this year. This position is one that teaches you many things and most of all humbles you to know that you are never in control.

As the year passed and small crises arose, God teaches you that He will control the situation as long as we are trying to do His work and turn it over to Him. At some moments we almost panic as to what needs to be done and then He opens the way for extraordinary solutions.

I would like to share one thing that God taught me during this year. It really does not deal with the Emmaus program but certainly can be applied. As some of you know, we had to bring my father in law to live with us this past summer after he fell and broke his hip. Let me tell you, that is a life changing event! As I am retired, I became his care giver and had to learn his capabilities of self care vs. what my responsibilities were. I know, my wife and I tried to keep a sense of humor when she would tell me “See what you get for praying for patience – God sent you my father”, but God had much more in store for me. My father in law was only here for a short time but every day was an adventure of one kind or another. Being older and more set in my ways than I want to admit, the task upset my routine and were done with resentment and out of duty. I never really changed the physical things done to meet his needs, but one day while asking him to do a small task he said “I try”. That same day God sent me a devotional that spoke to serving others out of love. I was not there, but God taught me a great lesson that day and the tasks became so much easier and even rewarding. My father in law passed away July 21, the day of our picnic, but left me much richer in spirit.

I guess what I am trying to say, is that when you come to work on a team or serve behind the scenes, Serve With Love!

Thanks to all you wonderful servants in the Emmanuel Emmaus Community!
