[Saint Lawrence River, Quebec, Canada]

Maelstrom paced the deck angrily. "I told you we should have gotten rid of
this interloper when we had the chance!"

"Watch your blood pressure," Lee answered, pushing the silent Mortimer into
the ship's cabin and locking the door.

Maelstrom didn't pay attention, only snorted in contempt.

Lee spread out his map. "I think I finally got these coordinates right."

"Yeah, that's what you said last time," Maelstrom jeered. "And we were off by
a mile!"

Lee whined. "Oh, quit complaining."

"Bet your cousin could have gotten it right," teased Maelstrom.

Lee threw a piece of driftwood. "Stop criticizing me! My father used to
say--" he mimicked the voice. "Lee, why can't you be more like your cousin?"

Maelstrom snickered, which only irritated Lee more.

A few yards upstream, Zack pointed out something. "Ivy, weren't you wearing a
necklace earlier?"

Ivy gasped. "The pearls are gone!"

Onboard the ship, Lee entered the cabin and faced Mortimer.

Mortimer only looked slightly fazed. "You're jealous of Maelstrom, right?"

"Ha!" Lee laughed in contempt. "Since when have I been jealous of anyone?"

"You were jealous of Trevor Lawrence in first grade," Mortimer countered.

"You were the one who stole Trevor's lunch."

"At least I didn't steal Trevor's homework and rewrite it with all the
answers wrong."

Lee frowned. "You know about that? Why didn't you blackmail me?" He put his
face in Mortimer's. "Too goody-goody for you, Mr. Perfect?"

"Lee, that would be considered extortion."

"Mortimer, you were always too ethical for your own good." Lee stepped
forward. His cousin was backing away.

Mortimer was getting nervous. "But what you were doing was dishonest and
illegal cheating!"

Lee took his cousin by the shirt collar. "I warned you those flippant retorts
of yours would get you in trouble someday. And now, cousin, that day has
come!" He pulled Mortimer out of the cabin and to the deck. "Too bad," Lee
said in mock sympathy. "You could never survive in the real world." With
this, he grabbed Mortimer and shoved him over the rail.

Mortimer plunged into the Saint Lawrence River, trying to keep his head above
water.

Carmen steered the boat over and helped Mortimer out of the river. "Are you
all right?"

"I'm fine," Mortimer gasped. "I'm just starting to wheeze."

"Oh, no." Ivy cried. "Another asthma attack?"

Mortimer pulled out his inhaler. "No." He took a breath, then explained. "The
inhaler will work almost everytime if you use it in time."

Above them, Maelstrom watched. "Someone saved the detective? Sink em!"

The command came too late. Carmen, Zack, and Ivy were already on the ship.

Maelstrom looked enraged. He yelled at his henchmen. "Don't just stand there,
you idiots! Shove them overboard!"

"On the contrary, the game is over, Maelstrom," Carmen called.

Maelstrom was incensed. "Carmen Sandiego, you may have won both our battles,
but you've lost the war!"

Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Zack had cut a rope. Maelstrom looked up,
raised his arm, and connected with a falling mast....

only to be showered with confetti. "How festive," Maelstrom snorted. Even
Zack looked irate at that one.

"Well, this has been fun," Lee announced. "But we must be going."

"Going?" Ivy repeated. "The war's not over yet."

The sound of bells rang, resonating in the air.

"What on Earth was that?" the two criminals yelled in unison.

Carmen smiled. "We figured we needed a backing army for this war, so we
called the River Patrol, the Coast Guard, and the Navy."

A voice could be heard. "We got you surrounded! Give yourselves up!"

"Never!" the partners in crime wailed. They climbed on a lifeboat, and were
gone.

Ivy pointed down. "Mortimer, what's that at your feet?"

Mortimer looked. "It's a pearl necklace."

Ivy snatched it up. "Don't try to sound innocent! You stole it!"

"I didn't! Lee must have dropped it!"

"Oh, really?" Ivy obviously didn't believe him. "Then why is it in your
possession? Possession is nine tenths of guilt."

"It's not in my possession!" Mortimer cried. This was turning into the
nightmare from last night. "I didn't take them!"

"Ivy, maybe he's telling the truth," Carmen suggested.

Ivy ignored Carmen and handcuffed Mortimer. "Let's just take this thief to
prison."

Mortimer put his wrists down. The cuffs somehow unlatched and clattered to
the ship deck.

Zack stared. "Golly, Carmen, maybe he really is in the same league as you."

Ivy gave an exasperated sigh. "Then I'll let it slide. But next time, it's
the slammer for you."

Carmen looked around the ship. She tried to change the subject. "Maybe
there's clue as to where Lee and Maelstrom went.

Mortimer lifted Lee's map from the table. "I think I know."
