Warning:This section does contain a little violence Zack slowly backed away. He brushed across the wall. He considered screaming for help. Lee reached in his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, along with a bottle of cologne. He poured the bottle's contents onto the rag. While Lee was preoccupied, Zack slowly inched toward the alley entrance. Unfortunately, Lee saw this coming. He grabbed Zack from behind. Zack tried to wrench free. Lee grabbed his rival's shirt collar in an iron grip. He quickly clamped the wet handkerchief over Zack's nose and mouth. Zack got so scared that he fainted. At Acme Headquarters, the radio's signals were futile. "Can't you make this thing work?" Ivy snapped angrily. "He's doing his best," Tatyanna said. "It's no use, Ivy," Josha said. "He's moved out of range." "This is all my fault." Ivy commented. "If only I hadn't wanted to play that stupid joke!" In Portland, Oregon, Carmen stood before the Oregon Art Institute. This she was going to play a few jokes of her own. "Got the silly string?" Across town, Zack was regaining consciousness. He got up and looked around. He in some sort of hotel room. He heard voices on the other side of the door. He tried the doorknob. The door was locked. Lee must have locked him in. In the Art Institute, Carmen, Moe, and Lars were rigging several of the artifact cases. Carmen checked off a list. "Fake snakes?" "Check." "Trip wires?" "Check." "Buckets of water?" "Check." "Whoopee cushion?" "Check." Carmen put away her list. There was a sudden crash at the door. Moe and Lars screamed and ran away. Carmen swiftly ducked into the shadows. A figure was slowly walking down the hall. Carmen glanced up. That silhouette looked awfully familiar. The figure suddenly tripped over the wire. He quickly got up and entered the exhibit hall. Carmen saw him in the light. It was Lee Jordan! Carmen gasped. She couldn't help it. Lee had heard her. Acting fast, Carmen rolled a bag of marbles at him. "How amusing," Lee mused. "I know you're in here, Carmen Sandiego! Remember the last time? And the time before that? AND the time before THAT?" Lee turned toward the exit and left. Carmen left her hiding place and decided to follow Lee. Keeping a close distance behind him, she trailed the former detective to a hotel. It looked well lit, so Carmen decided to go after him. She could always make an escape later. She went through the glass doors. Lee was walking up some carpeted stairs. Carmen dove behind a tall maid and watched Lee go into room 124. Meanwhile, in the room, Zack was throwing his weight against the door. Unfortunately, it didn't budge. "It's hopeless!" Lee called from the other side. Zack sank to the floor. Lee walked to the door and unlocked it. Back on the first floor, Carmen debated on what she should do. Someone walked past her, carrying a brown grocery bag. The figure knocked on the door of room 124. Lee answered it. Carmen decided to take a chance. She approached the door. Lee looked up and spotted her. "Well, Carmen, glad you finally decided to join us." The figure walked into the room and headed for the kitchen. Lee pulled Carmen into the room by tugging on her coat sleeve. She quickly glanced around. Zack was on the other end of the room, looking terrified. The figure reentered and spoke up. "What's going on in here?" Carmen glanced at him. She knew he and Lee must be related. They could even have been brothers. There were some differences in the facial features. But the two were the same height and weight. The hair color was the exact same shade of brown, although Lee had straight hair and the other's was curly. Zack groaned loudly. Lee's partner looked panicked. "Please, stop-" Lee looked annoyed. "Mortimer, can I see you in the kitchen?" With this, he dragged Mortimer off. Carmen and Zack leaned against the door to listen in. The door was thick, but the sound was leaking through. "Are you nuts?" Lee was saying. "You were the one who stuck a hundred scorpions in a Federal Express package and sent it special delivery to the president!" Mortimer protested. "It didn't do any harm!" "Mort, you landed half the secret service in the hospital with stings. And you gave the other half an eternal fear of the critters. Not to mention costing them a bundle to trap those things and ship them back to Arizona! And what were you think when you stole Trevor Lawrence's lunch in first grade? You felt so guilty that you sent Trevor reservations to the fanciest restaurant in town! Now stop it!" The two eavesdroppers backed from the door. Lee threw it open. Mortimer followed close behind. Carmen decided to try something. She buried her face in her hands and began to sob. "Stop crying!" Lee commanded. Carmen only sobbed louder. "Stop crying," Lee began, "Or I'll, I'll-" "Hey, Lee, don't threaten her," Mortimer quickly said. Lee bit back a scream of rage and stomped off. Mortimer followed. Carmen looked up and said to Zack, "I've been practicing that fake crying since my days at Acme. So, what happened to you?" "Carmen, I couldn't do anything! Lee cornered me in an alley! It would have been curtains!" Back at Acme Headquarters, the Chief was helping Ivy search for Lee. "OK, Lee escaped from jail two days ago. He was sighted in Portland, Oregon. So that may be where he is now. " "But where in Portland?" Ivy asked, glancing at the weather forecasts. A storm was headed for the Portland area. "Is that irony or bad luck?" Suddenly, there was a signal on the communicator. Ivy quickly answered it. "Hello? Zack! Where are you? Yes, I know. What?! Carmen's there? How can- Give me the hotel number, Cut off before Lee gets there." She quickly picked up the phone and began to dial. The hotel desk clerk answered and sent the call to room 124. Lee answered the phone. "Hello?" "I know where you are, Lee." "Oh, really?" "Yes. And I'm going to the old Fairgate Manor in a half hour." Ivy quickly slammed down the phone. "C-5 me to the Fairgate Manor," "What? But, Ivy-" "Chief, he knows I'll be there. So I'm guessing he'll take the bait and come after me." Lee was about to leave the hotel. "Mortimer, watch our two prisoners! And make sure they don't escape!" With this, he left the room. The storm had already begun. Rain was pouring down hard. Thunder could be heard in the distance, while lightning flashes streaked across the sky. Ivy approached the Fairgate Manor with caution. It had once been a large family's house. It was empty and deserted. She slipped in through the side door, and walked down the stairs to the wine cellar. The cellar was dimly lit. A minute later, Ivy heard a cough behind her. She whirled around to face Lee, who was clutching a wine bottle. Even in the dim light, Lee's eyes flashed dangerously. Ivy was undaunted. "You might as well give up now!" "Give up now?" Lee repeated. His fingers tightened around the bottle. "Are you crazy? You're pretty smart...a little too smart if you ask me." While Lee was talking, Ivy picked up a bottle and pulled out her swiss army knife. She used a blade to pop a cork directly at Lee. Lee ducked in time. The cork plugged into the wall. Ivy ducked behind a wine rack. Lee threw his bottle, which shattered on the wall. He picked up another one. Just then, the cellar was plunged into complete darkness! "Oh, great!" Lee snarled. "The storm's zapped the electricity. Well, good. Now we're really cut from civilization! Ivy tried to sneak away. She quietly began to climb the stairs, testing each one for creaks before putting her whole weight on it. Careful as she was, Ivy's luck ran out. She hit the loudest spot on the creakiest stair, and now even the wind could muffle the noise. There was the sound of more breaking glass. "You're not getting out of here alive!" Lee called. Ivy ran up the rest of the stairs and into the hallway. Lee was close behind, holding a jaggedly broken wine bottle. "End of the line," he said menacingly. He swung the bottle. Ivy managed to duck. She then delivered a swift karate kick to Lee's leg. He yelped in pain. Ivy ran up the staircase leading to the roof. "Don't you know by now that I can catch up to you?" she heard Lee yell from somewhere behind her. Ivy reached the rooftop. Lee followed her. The two began to struggle. Ivy usually used her martial arts so skillfully, she almost always got the upper hand. But the rain was pouring down in sheets, which made it difficult to see. And Lee had the added advantage of a weapon. At last, she managed to knock the broken bottle out of his hand. Ivy heard it clatter down the gutter and smash somewhere on the sidewalk below. Then Lee pushed her-hard. Ivy felt herself go over the edge. Her hands managed to grab the ledge of the building. Lee chuckled. "Say goodbye, Ivy." He prepared to step on her fingers.
