Father: 'What are you saying? Go away,
you're too noisy.'
As if making fun of his father, Yo-chan squints

Teruko: 'Wait, just a minute -'
Yanagisawa: 'What? There's nothing there.
What a nuisance you are!'
Teruko: 'No, see - a caterpillar!'

it all right for me to have come?'
Teruko: 'Of course. There's something I forgot
to do. I'll be back.'

He looks uneasy. He tries to hide his growing
anger as he continues,
Yamashita: But, think about what you're doing.'
Yanagisawa: '- what does it matter?'
Yamashita: 'What do you mean, what does it
matter -'
Title: 'THERE IS NO NEED FOR ME TO THINK

'FATHER CRITICAL RETURN IMMEDIATELY YANAGISAWA'
Yanagisawa is alarmed. Because he is facing
Teruko, he composes himself and tries to hide
the telegram. Teruko notices, and looks at him.
Teruko: 'What is it?'
Yanagisawa: 'It's nothing ...'
Teruko (reaching for the telegram): 'Something
must have happened. Please let me have a
look.'
Yanagisawa makes a move to intercept her,
but she forcibly snatches it out of his hand and
reads it. She stares at him in surprise and
concern.
Yanagisawa: 'I must go home.'

Father: 'Well, take a look in the microscope.
I have never seen anything so magnificent.'
Yamashita takes a look.
(Close-up) Microbes seen through the microscope.
Yamashita: 'Indeed! Where did you discover this'
Father: 'Isn't it something? On the far mountain,
to the back of the range ...'
Teruko enters looking sad. She looks the other
way. Her father notices.
Father: 'Teruko, what is the matter? You don't
look well at all.'
Teruko: 'It's nothing ...'
Understanding something of the situation,
Yamashita sighs. Teruko's father acts as though
nothing of concern is going on.
Father: 'I'm going back to the same place
again. I'd like to collect some better samples.'
The two men continue their conversation. Teruko
walks across the room. (She looks very sad.)

and she is unable to sleep.

slightly.
75. Teruko's bedroom (morning)
Title: 'THE MORNING LIGHT'
The window is open, and the morning sun
streams into the room. Teruko remembers nothing
from the day before and attempts to get out
of bed. Her head feels slightly heavy. She
forces herself to get up, and she goes to the
window to look outside.

Yamashita pays a visit. He meets Teruko's
father in the garden, briefly greets him and
hastens to Teruko's room.
77. Teruko's bedroom
Yamashita's entrance takes Teruko completely
by surprise. She hurriedly throws some clothes
on over her nightdress and awkwardly sits on
the bed. Yamashita sits down in a chair in front
of her.
Yamashita: 'How are you doing? Do you feel better?'
Teruko: 'Yes.'
She answers him, then sadly turns away, her
head bowed. Sympathetic as well as reassuring,
Yamashita says:
'This won't do, what is it that is making you sad?'
Title: 'LAST NIGHT YOU TRIED TO DIE ...'
78. Talking about the night before (insert)
Title: 'THIS IS THE ULTIMATE DILEMMA. WE
MUST WORK FOR LIFE WITH AN EFFORT
GREATER THAN DEATH. WE STRIVE. WE
WORK. IT IS THE COWARD WHO BECOMES

AND HASTENS DEATH ...'
Teruko gradually takes heart.
79. The interior of the church

transforming into a title.
Title: 'REJOICE YE MYRIADS! WHEN THE
LORD JESUS DEFEATS THE KINGDOM OF
THE DEAD, THE POWER OF DEATH WILL
HAVE VANISHED, AND OUR LIVES WILL BE
EVERLASTING.'
Teruko is deeply moved, and says to Yamashita:
'You know, for some reason I'm feeling better.'
Teruko appears happy, yet her face is still
tinged with sorrow. Yamashita leads her to the
window.
Yamashita: 'Just look at that blue sky, those
green trees'

CHARGED WITH THE VITALITY OF LIFE.'
81. (Insert) A blue sky

the sunshine.
82. Back to Teruko's bedroom

He leaves.
Teruko thanks him as she sees him off, and once
again admires the view out the window.
(Close-up) Her face, lost in thought.
Yamashita's face comes to mind, but then
again so does Yanagisawa's. Teruko resolves
to do her best not to think of Yanagisawa.
83. Yanagisawa's room (night)
Yanagisawa returns home drunk, but he is
definitely not happy in his drunken oblivion. He
picks up the photo of an actress on his desk.
(Close-up of the actress's photograph.)
He then tears it up. In anguish, he takes a photo
of Teruko from his desk drawer and stares at it.
As he does so, Teruko appears before him and
speaks to him. (Vision)
In frustration Yanagisawa buries his head in
his hands. He then drinks some water from a
pitcher beside him.
84. Yanagisawa's room (before noon)
Yanagisawa is now awake, brushing his teeth
and washing his face. An elderly steward
enters and sadly shows him an announcement
in the newspaper.
(Newspaper announcement)
'AUCTION OF YANAGISAWA COLLECTION
IN HAMACHO, NIHONBASHI WARD. BIDDING
ON JULY 15TH AND 16TH. PREVIEWS
IN THE MORNING, JULY 4TH AND 5TH.'
Steward: 'Sir, what is this announcement all
about?'
Yanagisawa hesitates.
Yanagisawa: 'Oh, it's nothing, I'm just selling
off some old things.'
Steward: 'But these are family heirlooms, left
to you by your ancestors. Why are you doing
this ... ?'
Yanagisawa: 'But I need the money. Why fuss
over a few heirlooms?'
Steward: 'Sir, what a monstrous thought ... but
I suppose it can't be helped.'
The steward bows his head, balking at the very
idea. Yanagisawa looks discomfited as he
dries his face with a towel.
85. The garden of Teruko's house
Teruko's father is tending his flower garden.
Teruko is playing quoits with her brother, Yo-
chan; she sits down on a nearby fence and
thinks for a moment.
(She recalls sailing with Yanagisawa) (Insert)
But she shrugs it off as something that happened
long ago. She then thinks of Yamashita.
(With Yamashita, conducting an experiment) (Insert)
'Yamashita is the more manly of the two', she
thinks.
Yo-chan: 'Sister, what are you thinking about?
It's your turn.'
Teruko: 'Oh, so it is. I had completely forgotten.'
She tosses another ring. Her father makes a
strange face and laughs.
(Close-up) Teruko's father's face.
86. The laboratory
Yamashita is working in the laboratory with his
assistant. Teruko suddenly visits the garden.
Teruko: 'May I come in?'
Yamashita: 'Teruko? Yes, please do. But it's
very dirty in here.
Teruko: 'What are you doing?'
Yamashita: 'This is radio-carbonium, a component
for a wireless electric light. I'm nearly
finished with my experiment, and if I'm
successful...'
Teruko: 'Oh, my -'
Yamashita: 'Don't touch that, it's dangerous! It
has an electric current running through it.'
Teruko: 'Don't frighten me so! Can I see it?'
She draws closer to look. The electric light has
a phosphorescent glow. They both watch it.

shrouded in a black cloak enters the room. He
walks across Teruko's room and approaches
her bed.
(Close-up) Teruko is sleeping.
The man looks into Teruko's face, and at that
very moment upsets a small figurine beside her.
Surprised, the man tries to hide himself. Teruko
wakes and switches on the lamp.
(Back) She sees the person in black furtively
standing in front of her bed and is about to
scream. The man draws close to Teruko and places
his hand over her mouth.
Yanagisawa: 'Please, wait - I'm not a thief!'
Then he pulls back the cloak's hood. Teruko,
surprised, recognizes Yanagisawa.
Teruko: 'Why have you come here? Please go
away!'
Yanagisawa: 'No, I've come to offer you an
apology.'
Yanagisawa speaks gently to Teruko. He sits
in a chair by her side, and they are both silent
for a moment.
Title: 'MISS SHIMAZAKI, I'VE COME TO
APOLOGIZE TO YOU. I INTENDED ONLY TO
LEAVE YOU THIS LETTER, I DID NOT MEAN
TO WAKE YOU.'
He gives her the letter and buries his face in his
hands. Teruko takes the letter over to the light
and reads it.
(The contents of the letter) Insert ...
Teruko: 'I understand ...'
She runs her hand over Yanagisawa's head.
Title: 'UNTIL NOW I HAVE BEEN DELUDED. I
AM LEAVING TO GO ABROAD ...'
Teruko: 'I understand, please take good care
of yourself.'
Her eyes glisten with tears.
Yanagisawa: 'From now on I intend to live an
honest life.'
The two clasp hands, and then part.
Title: 'GOODBYE ...'
Teruko weakly sits down on the bed as she
watches Yanagisawa leave.

son has gone abroad?'
She shows Yanagisawa's letter to Yamashita.
Yamashita: 'I received a letter as well.'
He takes a letter from Yanagisawa out of his
pocket.
Yamashita: 'For the first time, he will live an
honest life. I'm happy for him.'
Yamashita points in the distance.
