Many youth in Mississauga excel. Some youth also lead everyone, young or old, to great success. These pages will celebrate the achievements of youth who, working on their own ideas, show others that they too can make this a better world.

More Hair Sharing

As reported by the Mississauga News, in April 2003, H. Karimian and 9 other girls at Port Credit Secondary School chopped off their hair. They donated it to Angel Hair for Kids, a group that creates wigs for Canadian children suffering from hair loss.

Children can lose their hair due to burns, chemotherapy, or a condition called alopecia. Using hair from 10-15 ponytails, a wig creator can make a child a new head of hair.

Angel Hair for Kids was created by A. Ruggiero at Truly You Wigs & Hair Replacement and by R. Yearwood from the A Child's Voice Foundation.

Students at Port Credit SS also raised almost $800 for Angel Hair. Well done!

Sharing Their Hair

As reported by the Mississauga News, two 19-year-old teens have given an unusual gift. The teens, E. O'Neill and M. Doyon, had their foot-long ponytails cut. The hair was then donated to a program that makes free wigs for young cancer patients.

Some people undergoing treatment for cancer lose their hair. With wigs, they can have "real" hair until their own grows back. Locks for Love is the group in Florida that makes the wigs. It takes 10 to 12 ponytails to make just one wig!

The Lorne Park teens had grown their hair for years. They decided to cut their hair before leaving for university this fall.

Congratulations to them both for their generous and thoughtful gift! Once more, youth can lead us all by their example.

Sharing With Others

The youth groups at Erin Mills held a food drive for the Springfield Gardens Breakfast Club in spring 2002. They collected and donated 2 cubic metres of food!

The youth at Erin Mills in April 2002 also raised almost $400 for Oxfam Canada's Afghanistan relief fund.

Congratulations to all who helped with these great projects!
