Before I begin I will introduce ourselves-We are a Christian Home Schooling Family Christ is the CENTER of Our Home Un School, We believe that God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit all three in one is in our School but, also in all our SUBJECTS.
We believe we have been HomeUnSchooling our Children since the day they were born but, according to the government we have only been homeschooling 3 years now. Ha! What do they know.:-)
I am Sheila the (Home Un School Mom) and my dearly wonderful and helpful Husband the (Home Un School Dad) Steve. We have four really terrific boys that have been our joy, love, inspiration and sometimes our headaches.
Our oldest is Aaron who is 10yo who is a very big help to the family he is learning to do his chores and schoolwork without much complaing, he is very sentimental and a high concern for others. His learning style is linguistic. Aaron is in 4th grade we have tried different curriclums with him this year but, you can find more detail about curriculum on our "Further Into Our School Room Page." Our second son Steven Jr. who is 5yo and is very much a go getter and takes learning most of the time into his own hands. Steven is working on more constructive ways to express his anger and he will be entering kindergarten work this January 2001.
Then there is our third son Jeremiah who is 2 1/2yo, so you can imagine the terrible 2's going on at our house. Jeremiah enjoys our Home Un School if mommy asks him "Do you want to do school?" Jeremiah will say the word school and run to our Home Un School closet that has many school items enclosed, we are now looking into a simple preschool curriculum for Jeremiah and or mommy is going to create one for him.
Our last or fourth son is our most recent Benjamin who is 9 months old. Benjamin has become a pretty neat addition to our family, he is the center of attention and not just because he is the baby but, because Benjamin's personality requires that. Benjamin is now beginning to take interest more in toys, growls, and will say few words and loves to be read too. :-)

Now, that you have been acquainted with our beliefs a little bit and who we are I am going to begin to try and explain why we call ourselves Home Un Schooler's.
When we began home schooling we had the set time, desk, perfect schedule everything but, I noticed it didn't feel right it felt just like public school and that wasn't what we wanted.
So, our second year we switched curriculums, got rid of desks, and timing and just went with it but, that didn't work either. We see now that we don't want a total classroom setting nor do we want to just go all day long no matter what curriculum. This is where our new title comes in: Home Un School-We decided this year going into our third year we want a little of both-balance.
We want some structure (workbooks, worksheets) and some unstructured (activities, projects, hands-on, self-directed or self-driven learning)"Free Learning" we call it in our Home School. We want where our children have the opportunity to go with a topic and learn anything and everything about that topic within reason and under supervision.
We have made the decision where will have "un school times" meaning on these days we have a more relaxed learning enviornment. We have scheduled these days for Monday's and Friday's (not neccessarily will they stay on these days, being flexible is important we have learned in our children's education.)On these Un School days that we choose there are very little worksheets and or no worksheets and not long seatwork.
The children on these days can do their typing or spanish cassettes or finish up writings or projects or begin something new on their own. (Anything that sparks their learning desire-their healthy learning desires.)Now, on these Self-Reliant days or Free Learning Days they can very well still accomplish their three R's by flashcards, cds, and or some writing but small amount of seatwork. We have experienced with our children that long spans of time on one subject burn them out and they retain less, we do small intervals and the boys remember more and they don't get so frustrated.
We will do 15 minutes of a subject usually-15 minute intervals and we don't give them subject after subject breaks are needed. By doing our intervals they are great for our children because they learn more by not being so over-whelmed, burned out, or made to sit still for long periods of time. We have also dicovered with our children more than 20-30 minutes on a subject we tend to lose their attention and interest.
It is a known fact that children learn more in smaller amounts of time. If our children ask us to continue on a certain subject then we will but only if the children ask. We know then if they ask that we have their total attention and interest at hand. If they ask at anytime for our help or participation then that lets us know they need Shared Learning we call it or better known as Teaching.:-) To read more about our curriculum usage and more about us visit us in our School Room Page. :-)
God Bless You!
