While defensive operations are difficult to estiamte due to the large number of unknowns, ofensive opeations are not. The Republic attempted to inspire local uprisings among the populace, thus sparing them from having to commit large amounts of forces to take planets, but this saw limited success with only four known planets succesfully doing so (The New Essential Chronology; The Cestus Deception). This is unsuprising, as most of the planets who left the Republic did so for good reasons; even the Jedi Order could not fully condem their decision to do so. In fact, some Jedi joined with the Confederacy for this reason (Clone Wars: The Defense of Kamino). As a result, the Republic had to forcibly take most of the planets, a task far from easy. Fortunately the Grand Army of the Republic was designed for this – th was “built for heavy use and the unleashing of maximum-effort assaults without warning.” (Attack of the Clones Visual Dictionary) To take Munnilest required the commitment of “hundreds of assault ships” that were “groaning with troops” (The New Essential Chronology), which translates to somewhere between 3.2 million and 160 million troops committed to a single battle, and sufered heavy casualties with many of the ships being shot down. The fact that the battle was won by special forces operations does not alleviate the required troops, in the aftermath of the victory seventeen Acclamator class transports are seen landing to occupy a single city with 272,000 troops (Clone Wars Chapter 20) Merely siezing the capital and disarming the army will not cease hostilites as seen in the second Gulf War, thus the Grand Army of the Republic must have a presence around the globe. As even pre-spaceage worlds have hundreds of major cities with populations in the millions the size of the occupying force would be massive. In light of this it is unsuprising that the Republic would remove all technology from excessively hostile and strategically useless planets such as Geonosis (Death in the Catacombs); while such an endevor would initially require more troops then a garrison, after such an operation had been completed a much smaller force could easily hold the planet. However, for strategically valuable planets this was not the case. At Brentaal the Republic is shown to have committed a small force that suffered significant casualities. We see one Acclamator in the atmosphere with another three in space, and a later display showing an additional three task forces. All told this adds up to twelve Acclamators, or 192,000 troops. However Lord Tyrannus uses the plural form when saying General Kolar’s armies have surrendered, meaning that Genaral Kolar commanded at least 294,912 troops into battle, and possibly far more. This ignores the remaining forces led by General Kloon which were strong enough to sieze the planet. The planet was later ocupied with a governor appointed to rule them (Clone Wars: Victories and Sacrafices). Moderate forces consisting of several thousand troops were also shown to assault single bases in a number of other cases: · Nine Acclamators (144,000 troops) augmented by indigenous forces assaulted a Confederate artillery position on Mon Calamari (Clone Wars Chapter 5) · Four Venators (27,684 troops) were dispatched to conquer a Confederate outpost (Clone Wars Chapter 22) · Eleven Venators (76,032 troops) were sent to hunt General Grievous on Nelvaan (Clone Wars Chapter 22) · At least two divisions (18,432 troops) fought in the canyons of Aaroganar based on the fact that there wre three Generals present (Clone Wars: Last Stand on Jabiim) · A corps (36,864 troops) to aid the loyalists in Jabiim (Clone Wars: Last Stand on Jabiim; Republic Holonet News 14:7:02, “War on Jabiim ‘Inevitable’” SW Insider 68, page 68) · Ten Acclmators (160,000 troops) depart New Holstice after fighting the Mandalorians (Clone Wars: On the Fields of Battle) · 16,000 troops were sent to serve as a distraction while a Confederate factory was infiltrated on Zaadja (Clone Wars: On the Fields of Battle) · Nine Acclamators (144,000 troops) were observed to have been shot down in a failed raid on Hypori (Clone Wars Chapter 20) · 20,000 troops were dispatched to assist an independent mercenary group retake a single outpost on Praesitlyn (Jedi Trial) · Five Venators (34,560 troops) sent to hunt General Grievous and aid a local resistance movement overthrow a single city (Revenge of the Sith) · A full battlegroup (AKA a division, or 18,432 troops) was sent to Tythe in the hopes of capturing Lord Tyrannus (Labyrinth of Evil; Evasive Action: Reversal of Fortune) · Three Venators (20,736 troops) were dispatched to capture a single mansion on Cato Neimoidia (Labyrinth of Evil). That the Republic could expend tens to hundreds of thousands of clones against such small targets points and millions in initial assaults (to say nothing of extended campaigns) on thousands of worlds simultaneously points to how many troops they had. They could even afford to lend small warships to senators to conduct private economic interest research missions on the front lines (Clone Wars: When They Were Brothers) at a time when the war was at a stalemate.
