Directed by Lucio Fulci Starring Tisa Farrow and Ian McCulloch
Zombie opens with a seemingly unmanned sailboat drifting into New York harbor. The harbor police board to investigate. One of them is quickly dispatched by a zombie found lurking below deck. The other lives to tell the tale and to help bring his partner back to the medical examiner's office. Meanwhile, a man and a woman find themselves drawn to the ship looking for answers. The man is a reporter who has been assigned to get the story. The woman is the daughter of the boat's owner, a professor who has disappeared while studying in the Antilles. The pair realize they have a common goal and decide to team up for further investigations. They find another couple with a boat, who are willing to take them on the journey to the islands and the foursome sets sail. Little do they know what lies ahead!
Meanwhile, on Matool a second professor is supposedly investigating recent outbreaks of a "disease" which causes its sufferers to behave in very strange ways. It seems they get sick and die only to come back to life intent on all manner of carnage. The doctor's young wife wants to get off the island while the gettin's good but you know those weird academic types: anything to further humankind's knowledge!
When the four New York types finally land on the island they immediately see a very strange sight. Copious quantities of bodies are being thrown into a pit, all of them shot through the head. Horror fans know that can only mean one thing...Zombies!
The late Lucio Fulci has both outspoken critics and a cadre of die-hard fans. I fall somewhere in the middle. Some of the stuff he's done works pretty well. Other stuff kinda bites the big 'un. Zombie is a good solid three brainer flick and a must-see for zombie freaks and/or gorehounds. This is one of Fulci's more linear works and mainstream horror fans may find it at least tolerable. Don't miss the great underwater battle between a zombie and a shark (!). Those of you with occular sensitivities be warned; eye violence ahead! -Jenny Stumps
