| Two Tim Conway movies is one night. This truly is an age of miracles. I've not seen many Tim Conway movies outside of the Dorf series so when I saw this double feature DVD for cheap I decided to give the old boy a whirl. I probably should have just stuck with Dorf. I watched They Went That a Way and That a Way first. My sweet Lord, that title is a pain in the ass to type out. I don't know what the hell they were thinking. I guess it fits though because the movie itself is poorly written and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The whole thing has a sloppy feeling about it but it did make me laugh a few times. Tim and some Oliver Hardy looking guy are two dipshit deputies who are sent undercover into a southern work prison to find out where an old convict hid a bunch of money. I'm not sure why they didn't just beat the old man with rubber hoses or something instead. I guess most people think beating the elderly with rubber hoses just doesn't make good comedy. The guy in charge of the whole debacle manages to die almost immediately so the boys are trapped inside and have to resort to a whole lot of wacky hijinks to get back out. Needless to say this is not exactly Oscar caliber material but it was funny in parts which is more than I can say for... The Longshot was directed by Paul Bartel and starts off with Tim Conway rapping the theme song. I sorta got my hopes up but I'm afraid it was all downhill from there. It turned out to be one of the least funny comedies that I've ever seen. Tim, Harvey Korman, some other guy, and the dad from Blossom are all friends who are obsessed with making a quick buck. Well, I say they are friends but really they are just such miserable, cheap bastards nobody else wants to hang out with them. They spend all their time blowing money at the horse track and getting all hot and bothered over thirty cent poker hands. I guess it is supposed to be funny but it seemed more sleazy and hateful to me than anything else. They hook up with this fat Mexican stereotype in ill fitting pants who says he will feed the long shot horse some crystal meth or something and they can all make a lot of money. They just have to come up with a few thousand dollars to finance the entire thing. I swear this is supposed to be a comedy. Tim decides to seduce Stella Stevens. That is how we know Tim wrote the script. Nobody else would even dream that scenario would even be possible. Stella has a lot of money because she is blonde and is prone to splashing mud on people when she rips through in her Rolls Royce. The seduction segment contains two or three of the only mildly funny moments in the entire movie. Her dog hit Tim in the balls and I kinda chuckled about that. The thing with Stella doesn't really work out but the boys end up getting the money but of course shit happens and everything falls apart and they end up owing the mob a lot of money. Will our heroes make the long shot or will they end up in the trunk of a junked car in the middle of New Jersey somewhere? I know which scenario I was rooting for. |
