Disconnected
If I am going to talk about Disconnected then I guess I first need to talk about Gorman Bechard. Gorman is an author, director, photographer, and God knows what else. He has his fingers in a lot of pies. I first became away of Gorman when I read his short story "Pigs." It was in an anthology full of sick and depraved stories but his stood out as the sickest and most depraved of the bunch. Disconnected was the first movie he directed and I hate to say it...but it shows

The story is centered around a young lady who has quite a lot of drama in her life. It seems that her slutty twin sister is sleeping with her boyfriend, she is getting these weird phonecalls at all hours of the day and night, and oh yeah...there is a sex maniac running around her neighborhood slashing women to death. The good news is that she has a new man in her life. The bad news is it looks like she is next on the chopping block.

On a technical level the movie is often a failure. Scenes go on endlessly for no reason then just abruptly end. At least one scene is shot with the camera directly facing the early morning sun so all you see are feet and a whole lot of glare. There are several scenes where characters are visibly carrying on a conversation but all you hear is music blaring on the soundtrack. It isn't like they are making small talk either. It is like...plot.

The weird thing is that it is still a very watchable movie. The lead actress is appealing and that helps. She plays both sisters so she gets a lot of screentime. The phone calls are actually a little creepy and jarring. The sound sorta like Eddie Van Halen doing a guitar solo while falling down a flight of stairs. You get to the point where you dread hearing the phone ring as much as she does. There are some disturbing bits that really work and the rest of it is often just so goddamned weird you can't help but keep watching. It isn't a movie for the impatient or the faint of heart. Most people probably aren't going to make it very far into it but if you have a taste for the kind of movies we review on this site you should be all over this one.
