| Directed by David DeCoteau Starring-Kim McKamy, Sylvia Summers, and Thomas Bern Back when the late, great video distributer Wizard Video was heading into it's last days they started cranking out straight to video movies with the logo "Too Gory for the Silver Screen" on them. Too gory also usually meant too shitty. Dreamaniac has a couple of things in it's favor. It is directed by David DeCoteau, the man who directed such classics and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, Nightmare Sisters, and a host of Full Moon gems. Another thing that ensures it's place in cinematic history is that the female lead is the lady who would go on to be known as Ashlyn Gere, one of the more attractive porn stars in recent years. It is also the first movie to not only feature the smothering to death of a zombie but a decapitation using a power drill...but we will get to that later. The movie itself is pretty goofy. We start off with a wholesome, whitebread looking heavy metal dude named Adam. Adam dabbles in black magic on the side and in between freaky wet dreams he manages to summon forth Lily, a succubus. His girlfriend Pat talks him into letting her sister use his apartment to throw a party. It seems she wants to join a sorority and wants to make a good impression on the members. The party goers are all smug, prissy. irritating sorority sisters and frat boys. Thier snobbery leads to some pretty funny dialogue such as- Pat-Do I know you? Francis-I doubt it...I went to private schools all my life and I'm richer than shit. Pat-Francis?I thought I recognized those small tits. Well,I thought it was funny anyway. Lily crashes the party and starts killing them off one by one. It's fairly standard slasher stuff for a while with people going off to do the dirty, getting butchered, and returning as killer zombies. Adam knows what is going on and tries to get Lily to stop. He doesn't try very hard though and before long he is running around with various sharp objects helping Lily out. The sisters battle the forces of darkness right up until a twist ending comes out of nowhere and leaves you sputtering and gasping in shock and a slow rising rage culminating in an undeniable urge to throw something, ANYTHING. There is some funny dialogue, a bit of nice gore...particularly the stuff with the power drill, lots of sex but little nudity, and a lot of classic 80's era cheese. It makes little sense and doesn't even bother trying to explain most things that are going on but something about it really appealed to me. Don't go into it expected much and you won't be disappointed. It also helps if you try to not apply any kind of logic or reason to it...just relax and enjoy the blood and boobies.-badfish Rating-3 Brains |
