Junk is one of the many Japanese movies that have taken the Western horror community by storm. At a time when most new American genre films are tired and dull the stuff coming out of Asia is mindblowing. Junk combines the classic U.S. / Italian gutmuncher zombie movie with Asian weirdness with satisfying results.
The story is about a group of first time jewel thieves who travel to an abandoned factory to meet up with a fence. The most likable of the bunch is a woman who just wants enough money to buy a nice sports car. She is also labeled as a feminist and therefore the target of jokes and other harrassment from the fellas. All goes well until they start poking around the factory and soon discover it's not as abandoned as they thought. The army has been messing with a new zombie juice (they never learn do they?) and are storing the test subject in the factory. If the zombies weren't bad enough the fence arrives and makes it pretty clear that the only payment they are going to recieve is a bullet in the head. Zombie mayhem ensues, entrails are chewed, people die horrible screaming deaths...oooh yeaah!
Out of the 3 recent Japanese zombie movies I've seen - Junk, Wild Zero, and Versus - Junk will probably appeal to most horror fans the most. Wild Zero is my personal favorite but it's pretty out there and tends to be a love it or hate it type thing. If you want something fresh, or just miss the gory old days, give Junk a shot.-badfish
