I saw this movie under the title Trespassing. I'm not sure why they changed it for the home video release but the new title sucks. Trespassing has something to do with what the movie is about at least. The video cover is pretty tragic as well. I mean it has female flesh on display and creeeepy skulls and everything but it is really sort of misleading. This isn't the straight to video titties and gore movie that the cover makes it out to be. It is actually something better.
A young guy is working on his college thesis and has to go out to a supposedly haunted plantation out in the middle of nowhere. He takes along his brother, their friend, and the two good looking lesbians you see on the cover up there. They are going to shoot some video of the place for the thesis and do whatever young people do while away from adult supervision and moral obligations. Things don't really work out that way and some really, really bad things happen to them.
It sounds like pretty standard stuff just going by that synopsis and I guess it is when you get right down to it. A couple of things make this one stand out though. The main one being the acting. The acting is way better than I expected from something like this. I've read a couple of other reviews that didn't like the acting. They said the people were irritating and overacted. I disagree. They had authentic reactions to what was going on. I love slasher films but I've never seen anybody act the way a real person would when confronted with certain death. These people are scared. I'm talking total, wall eyed, shit in your pants, right on the brink of totally losing your mind kinda scared. It totally got under my skin and actually made me nervous.
Good acting doesn't mean a whole lot without good writing and thankfully this movie was pretty strong in that department too. The dialogue is well done and you can tell they were really trying to scare the viewer. It doesn't explain everything that is going on. You are probably going to have a few questions after the credits roll. There is no neat explanation at the end...but real life is rarely ever neat and easy. If it was I probably wouldn't be sitting here writing a horror movie review at 1:30am on a Saturday night while other people are out being social or God forbid, sleeping.
Ignore the lame cover and give this one a shot. If you don't like it...well, everyone is entitled to be wrong. - badfish |
