Drinking
Place in Chiang Mai
As we know that Thailand
ranks the fifth-drunkest country in the world therefore there are a lot of
drinking places in Thailand
including Chiang mai, a popular toruist province. In Chiang mai there are many
styles of drinking places for various types of people providing service both
day and night. As to day time, there are natural places such as damns, waterfalls,
swamp, etc. There are restaurants around those places. The favorite kind of
foods usually are eastern foods such as sticky rice, grilled chicken and
Somtam. In holiday, people usually come with friend to visit natural places and
drink. Moreover, even in the official working time(12.00-6.00 pm),we can still
see many people coming to drink and drink. Some girls dress in student uniform
to drink. There are also many restaurant with karaoke service during day time
for drinking and many people come. At night, there are numerous drinking
places around Chiang mai in urban and
rural areas. As we drive along the street
we will see many small corners that people gathering to drink. You
cannot miss it wherever you go even you drive near universities or temples. For
young people, they usually go to Nimanhamin
Road that has a lot of drinking places. The
popular places are Monkey club and Warm up. There will be drinking section
where people can order foods and dancing section where people enjoy listening
to lound music(usually Hiphop) and dance.
Alcohol consumption among adolescents has increased
following cuasing problem in making decision
(http://intraserver.nurse.cmu.ac.th )and alcohol addiction. There has been a
poilicy to ban alcolhol advertisement but it does not work well as we still
cleary see numerous people drinking days and nights. There are other factors
which are more powerful than advertsiement such as friend's pursuation, or
having one's own problem with no better solution. We generally know that Chiang
mai people have easy-going personality therefore it could easily turn them to
play and drink beucase they expect life to be fun and not serious.
The solution of this problem seems to be far and far away
if people care more about making Chiang mai a tourist place with more and more
drinking places instead of caring the number of alcoholic people.

Globalization greatly improves economic all around the
world. Globalization raises the productivity and living standards of people in
countries that open themselves to the global market place. For less developed
countries, globalization offers access to foreign capital, global export
markets, and advanced technology while breaking the monopoly of inefficient and
protected domestic producers. Faster growth, in turn, promotes poverty
reduction, democratization, and higher labor and environmental
standards(http://www.freetrade.org/issues/globalization.html)
As to Thailand,
Globalization also plays important role. It makes Thailand stands as the world No.1
exporter of rice and natural rubber, and the leading exporter of chicken meat,
shrimp, sugar, fruits and several other tropical product.
Moreover, agricultural GDP grew by average
nearly 5 percent annually during 1998-2003.Plus it reduced the proportion of the poor in
Thailand from 32.6 percent in 1988 to 11.3 percent in 2004.Finally,We can
borrow Money from Japan and other developed countries to improve transportation
and other neccessary things in Thai.
As to communication, there is internet that allow people
to access massive information around the world. For exampe, people can use
E-learning for distance learning from anywhere around the world. Businessmen
can use the ability of Email to reach a worldwide audinece with minimal
effort(Buzzle.com).People can also work at home. Working at home enable us to
gain personal freedom, be with the family, exploit tax advantages and reduce
stress.
As to cultural benefit. There is a principle
that"Global entertainment companies shape the perceptions and dreams of
ordinary citizens, wherever they live"Japan
and South Korea
benefit from the globalization of culture. Japan also export video games and
Japanese food to the world.(www.globalpolicy.org/)
We can see example of cultural appreciation in Thai
people and teenagers who dress like Japnease and Korean stars. Cultural benefit
from globalization can be useful for tourism in Thailand. Currently, tourism is a 5 top of high income
of Thailand.
Government encourages Thai tourists to travel in Thailand.
Globalization also improves environment. Environmental
activists who criticize free trade often say if people living like American, we
need 7 more earths. However there are indicator to show that US living is not unsustainable,
First, for Air quality, between 1970 and 1997,U.S. population increased 31
percent, yet total air pollution actually decreased by about 31 percent. Secondly,
for water quaility, in 1972, approximately 36 percent of American streams were
usable for fishing and/or swimming. This had increased to 64 percent by 1982
and 85% by 1994.Thirdly,for timber supply, the net growth of timber has
exceeded the levels of timber harvest every decade since 1952.Next,for
agricultural production, in the past 30 years, the production of food grains in
the United States increased by 82 percent. Finally, for availability of mineral
resources, resources that were once considered scarce are now known to be
abundant.

Positive
and Negative Impact of Modernity and Education
:
A
Comparative study between
"Diary of Buageaw" and "Luk E Sarn"
Introduction
Since the coming of modernity to Thailand, there
have been many changes in the ways of lifes of Thai people. Many people think
that modernity is the best way to solve all problems and provides comfortable
and glamorous life. Therefore Thai people try to spread modernity to every
provinces. However, there are also negative impacts to people in many issues
such as culture, economic, environment, social values, etc. Moreover, the
disadvantages seems to spread more and more to people in rural areas as we see
that they earn very small amount of money and they need to go to cities to work
hard for jobs that provide low salary. Therefore here is a question: Is
modernity really a good way? In this paper, I will study the lifes of people living in urban area of
northern area with the coming of modernity-the diary of Buageaw and the eastern
area that still preserves the traditional way-Luk E san to see how different with and without of modernity in
their lifes.
In Luk E'san, people in the village
do not need things from modernity at all but they still lead a happy life with
thier native lifestyles. They don't want a
big house, a moblie phone, a luxurious car, etc. For food, they just live with
the food in the environment around them.
For example, they harvest vegetables in the forest and hunt some small
animals such as fogs, birds, etc. Villagers don't need to ask for expensive
food in restaurant or KFC like people in the city. The food from the forest
seems to please Coon, the protagonist of this story enough that he feels
excited every time his family get things from forest and has his mother cook
them for him .Considered about children in big city, they would not be pleased
with this kind of food. It seems to be dirty and look cheap. The
prize of food is the indicater how good it is. Giving value like this
will never end becuase people can never
be satisfied with food at home and many people work hard in order to take thier
families to go to luxuruios restaurants. Is food in luxurios restaurant better
than food in Luk E san story? In term of cleanness, it would be. However, if we
compare about happiness from having it. I believe the kid in luk e san would be
equal to kids in city having food in luxurius restaurant. Moreoever, he would
prefer food he has to food in restaurant. The benefit of living there is they
are not many luxurious restaurant like in big city therefore he does not be
lured by temptation of them. For relationship, villagers have strong bound with one another. They coperate to
gather food in the forests. They give food to thier neighbours. People
are cincere with one another. They don't judge and seek relationship with
people by considering money and how rich they are. Moreover, they don't seek
relationship by thinking about benefits. People do not pretend at another at
all. For entertainment, Coon and the villagers do not demand expensive things
like people in big cities. They don't need big telvision, decent stereo system,
internet and other electronic tools. When Coon's father plays traditional
musical instrument called "can" to Coon, he is pleased enough. Moreover,
they don't need to go out to big department stores or Siam square to spend money ;just
going to the forest to hunt and gather wild things is fun enough for Coon. Life in the village is simple and
follow natural ways. Coon and his friends express thier sexual feeling in
straightfoward way. They don't recieve things that may distract mind to be
abnormal from big city like porn movies, violence games and movies that
teenagers from big city experience them and some of them turn to use violence
to people around them. Villagers regard temples as the center of town and they
often go to the temple for monks' teaching. On the contrary, people in big city
do not pay much attention to religious. We can see that life without modernit
of Coon has many spiritual benefits to him. However, we see that many villagers
are poor and modern equipment are importent to them to increase thier products
and they need modern equipment to improve thier house's quailities.
For diary of Buageaw, we obviously see the
damage of modernity from big city to Bua geaw and other girls in village of the
northern Thailand.
Modernity makes people to be greedy. They want to be rich without caring if
things they do are good or bad. Some people build commercial sex places and lie
girls in rural areas to be raped and forced to become prostitutes. As to
prositution in city nowadays, girls often are not forced to do but they come to
be becuase of money. When modernity comes to rural areas, it makes people want
to earn expensive things to make
themselves look good like people in big cities. Villagers stat to be not
satisfied with the condition they live. Girls in villages know that one way to
get these things is to use thier bodies. Plus they can earn money to support
thier families to buy materials. Another thing from modernity that lure
villagers to want materials is television and movies. Many soap opera Thai
movies always show people with expensive cars, cloth and houses. Plus
commerical adds always try to sell mobile phones and other stuffs. It drives
girls in village want to have these kinds of things. Villagers are left to be the defeated. As to Chad, he is
poor so he is not attract to girls he wants. Without modernity, Chad may
successfully be married with Tamatari. However, the modernity separate him by
taking Tamatari to enter the world of rich people and expensive materials. There
are also things which are benefits from modernity in this story. First, electricity
provide more time for them at nights. Secondly, international business of the
queen enable girls in trobles to have hope again to do a good job. Moreover
modern equipments allow disabled girls to be comfortable in their daily
activities.
Education is
the best solution for villagers to adjust modernity to thier lifestyles. I
don't mean that people who have native knowlege in "Luk E Sarn" are
stupid but they need new knowlege to adapt with unavoidable new world of modernity.
If Coon and villagers continue to be the same like this, they cannot survive in
this near future. We can see that sometimes when his family cannot provide many
products, they are so poor. In social nowadays, there are polution from
factories that contaminate the forest areas. Then Coon's family would find it's
harder and harder to gather forest foods. Moreover, many villagers who are
farmers need to face high competition from people who use modern technology to
increase thier products. Then they cannot fight if they don't use technology
with thier farms. Futhermore, when international stores such as Lotus or Big C
come to village, farmers and local stores will face difficulty to compete with
them. Finally Coon may lose his farm and have to go to big city to be a laboror
to earn few salary. We also see this example from the writer of this story
"Cumpoon".He uses the character of Coon as his childhood's dream. Then
he has to go to big city to be a laborer like many people from the eastern part
of Thailand.
With hardship of life, when political party gives them money to survive for a
day, many of them would not reject it. Moreover, when westerners come to ask
for girls in the eastern Thailand,
they would be pleased in order to survive to poverty and have someone to
support thier family. These are the hardship of lifes which are not mentioned in the story of Luk E
Sarn. Therefore the government do need to provide good education for new
generation of people in this area; studying with few teachers in limited area
is not enough for them. They need to learn how to increase the productivity, how
to do economical analysis, learn about politic, etc in order to survive in this
changing world. We need to place college, bank, commercial zones which provide
opportunity for local people to earn more money so they do not need to
immigrate to do low jobs in big cities. And they need to accept the chaging of
the world and adapt to it. They can still often come to temple and follow
tradition lifestyles but not to view modernity as a bad thing and never learn
to benefit from it. For girls in the story" diary of Buageaw", we
seriously need to improve education to them. The first and the most important
subject is not match or language but the study of modernity and negative impact
from big city. They need to know the danger of people in the city that will
take advantage for them. Plus there should be the subject that teach villagers
to be aware the danger of expensive things that lure them to work for bad jobs
in big cities. The government must not only provide TV and electricity for them
without advises. Giving girls the opportunity to work in the Queen's business
is a good idea but how many girls will have this benefits? Therefore the
government should expand this kind of opportunity not only for diasabled girls
but to massive groups of all villagers. If the goverment provide good education
and enough jobs for them, they would not be lured to become prostitutes.
In conclusion, modernity provides
both of benefits and disadvantages. Life of people in "Luke E Sarn"
story is a a good and peacful life but there is no way we can stop the
spreading of modernity to thier village and it can create negative impact to
people as we see in the "diary of Buageaw" Modernity must come with
good education in order to help villagers to learn to benefit from it and
avoide negative effects. I'm taking about things that the government and
everyone knows but many of them do not really care. The policy of some
political party to give money to buy native people's hearts is not a good idea
since they have no good education to use it. They might spend it to buy mobile
phones or motocycles. These villagers will never be able to totally get to real
good quaility of life with good works and good income with this policy.
