First Review

Write clearly on either 1 or 2:

1. If you were directing Galileo, tell the cast your concept of the play: an idea that links the fourteen scenes.  Tell your actors how you see the scenes expressing variations of your concept. The hard part: in a good drama, everybody’s right (particularly the people you don’t like). [For fun: who would you want in the cast?]

2. The appeal of the Ptolemaic Theory: why, after Clavius agrees that Galileo has falsified the theory, do Bellarmin, Barberini, Ludovico and the Little Monk continue to reject the “New Astronomy”? How in the world can geocentrism still survive?

Then write on:

3. What do you think Florman would have added to our discussions of technological progress and the purpose of knowledge?

-- You know the rules. Due Monday, Sept. 21 by 5:00 PM.

Some sobering parallels for thought: The raucous mob-scene of Scene 10 (“Galileo, the bible-Killer!”) and our inchoate mob-scene on Sept. 12 (did you miss the guerilla theater at the event: the “Billionaires for Wealthcare”?) ; also, “Creation,” the soon-to-be released movie on Darwin, cannot find a distributor in the US. No problem with films of Dan Brown novels, though.
