Approaches to Reading:

  • Make a mental outline of each reading, with highlights of content;
  • Continue by making a list of topics covered, and determine where to find them;
  • Determine the main point the author is making -- what is it?
  • Your initial responses & reactions (while reading -- kept in online journal or on notecards)
  • Contemplate the material and then write down your thoughts, either in an organized manner, or in the form of a list or random thoughts.  Relate what you have learned to your own experience.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, the student will be able to

  • Discuss the relation of art, culture and media to self-identifying written discourse, including autobiography and memoir;
  • Discuss how one builds a sense of individual or collective identity through narrative;
  • Describe and respond to art and discuss how it relates to an artist, trend or socio-demographic situation;
  • Analyze how media representations of the world influence our perceptions of ourselves and how writers unconsciously adopt, incorporate, and/or internalize the ideas;
  • Define "culture" and relate it to one's sense of self as reflected in autobiography
  • Discuss the globalization of information and describe how it affects one's idea of self and group identity (whether it be a nation or new community)
  • Discuss how the ideas of artists reflect prevailing ideas about oneself and the "Other", and how our attitudes about the "Other" (fear or envy) affect one's autobiographical writings about oneself vis-à-vis the "Other"
  • Embark on an adventure of self-discovery & developing creativity!!
