Questions for your Journal

  • Why does Jean Baudrillard critique the Disney Company and the "Disneyfication" of various locations, such as 42nd St. in New York City?  Do you agree with any of the points he is making?  Does he believe that "Disney culture" is replacing "real" culture, and stripping people of their freedom to live within their culture?
  • What do you think of Baudrillard's suggestion that Disney is "now in the process of capturing all the real world to integrate it into its synthetic universe, in the form of a vast "reality show" where reality itself becomes a spectacle"?  What impact could that have on the individual?
  • Please comment on some of McLuhan's quotes and sayings.
  • What does Phillip Hammond have to say about how cultural identity is formed?
  • Do you think that credible journalism on the Internet can help readers separate credible and reliable information from opinions, propaganda and "hate" sites?  How can one actually determine if information is reliable?
