-- Running from 1603 to 1649 in UK History--

The Stuart Dynasty was the period between the fall of the Tudor Dynasty and the Civil War.

James I

JAMES I --- 1603 to 1625

The son of Mary Queen of Scots, ruled for 22 years. He Believed in Devine Right (The King is above the law) Church of England became very strong under James I. James didn't like the Puritans (who wanted to purify the Church of England) So they left England and came to America. He had the Bible Translated into English. Attempted to make Royal Power stronger. Tried to collect taxes without Parliaments consent. James I dismissed Parliament and called for elections everytime Parliament got tougher on him.

Charles I

CHARLES I --- 1625 to 1649

Charles also believed in Devine Right. He lacked judgment, and was a tyrant. Fought constently with Parliament. 1628, he had financial problems due to many unsuccessfull wars. Then, Parliament took advantages, and wouldn't let him have taxes. In 1628, they forced him to sign the "Petition of Rights", which included;

1. NO one could be taxed without Parliaments consent.

2. NO one could be imprisoned without Jury Trial.

3. NO one could be forced to quarter soldiers in homes during Peace times.

Charles didnt call on Parliament for 10 years after the "Petition of Rights". In 1639, Scottish Army invaded England. Then Charles HAD to call on Parliament for Tax Money. Parliament; "We cannot be dismissed without our own consent". Suddenly the people started to take sides, The Kings side or Parliament. Charles I was beheaded.

This marks the beginning of the Civil War....
