| Why Alec? | ||||
| So why,of all the people in Goldeneye and indeed the James Bond movies, do we like Alec Trevelyan? Why do we write fanfics about the villain of the movie who spends the majority of the film trying to kill Bond, who is the hero in this story? Is it the voice? Is it the fact that he was once Bond's friend? Is it the expression on his face when he speaks of his parents? What is it? I mean, there has to be a reason, right? My answer is that it is all of this and one thing more: the slight discrepancies in the movie script. There is the slight doubt, throughout the movie, that Trevelyan really switched sides intentionally. A slight weakness in Alec's inflection as he talks of his parents endears us to him, makes us realize that he is not a monster; he is, in fact, capable of feeling real emotional pain. This happens again when we hear him tell Bond that he knew that Bond's loyalty was always to the mission, never to his friend; it could not be more obvious that the former 00 agent is feeling betrayed. In short, it is the fact that, unlike so many other Bond villains, Alec Trevelyan is quite arguably human. Of course, I could be wrong. It could simply be that Sean Bean played the part. That voice alone would do it. |
