HOW TO PREPARE
ENGLISH TESTS (NEW HEADWAY) : 3rd FORM
Home
DUTCH VERSION COMING SOON !
I. VOCABULARY

A. EXERCISE ONE : Filling out the missing words in sentences

1. Use the wordlists I gave you.
Write down the translation of the English words in the empty columns as you study them. You can find the translations in Mr Van Puyenbroeck's TELEX-programmes for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th form.

2. How can you find out which spelling mistakes you make ? Look at the Dutch translations and
writ down the English version of each word.

3.
Use the correct part of speech (= "woordsoort"). Do you need an adjective ? Or perhaps a
verb ?
Remember : all the words in the wordlist are followed by an abbreviation (= "afkorting"), telling you what part of speech they are.

eg. "I asked him to ............. me."
--> It is clear that you need a VERB (e.g. call) here, not a NOUN.

4. You really DON'T know the word from the word from the wordlist ?
Find another word with the same meaning. Maybe* you can still get half a mark for it (if it is spellt correctly, of course.)

* : Ask you teacher first whether you'll get marks for this.

5. BUT : If the first letter of the word is given, you HAVE to write down the word from the
wordlist, not a synonym.
B. EXERCISE TWO : Building sentences

1.
Build example sentences with difficult words at home.

2. Are you have difficulties coming up with an example sentence ? Or perhaps you don't understand the word ? Look it up in
an English-English dictionary (book, CD-rom or online) You'll often find
example sentences there. Make sure that your example sentence has to do with the meaning that you're looking for !
II. GRAMMAR

1. Read the
Grammar Reference at the back of your Student's Book carefully.
--> Look up the words you don't know.
--> To understand a rule it's important to have a good look at the example(s) !

2. Take your
Workbook. Have another look at the exercises we did.

3. There are
extra exercises at the back of your Workbook (p. 81)
III. TEXTS

1.
Read the texts a few times. Which information is important ?

2.
Read the questions on the test carefully. Do you understand the question ? Don't start writing down
   an answer immediately.

3.
Use information FROM THE TEXT to answer the questions. Don't invent anything or write down
other information. (Unless we ask for your personal opinion, of course.)
IV. CULTURE and EVERYDAY ENGLISH

Learn these things by heart ! It's an easy way to gain marks.
Good luck !
