I. VOCABULARY A. Filling out the missing words in sentences 1. Use the wordlists I gave you. Write down the translation of the English words on a sheet of paper and put it next to the columns with the English words. Now study the words from Dutch to English and from English to Dutch. By the way, you can find the translations of all the words in Mr Van Puyenbroeck's TELEX-programme. 2. A lot of people make spelling mistakes. Why don't you look at the Dutch translations and write down the English version of each word ? In this way you will find out which spelling mistakes you make. 3. Use the correct part of speech (= "woordsoort"). Do you need a verb ? Or perhaps a noun ? e.g. I asked him to .................... you. --> It is clear that you need a VERB here, not a NOUN. So only think of verbs when you look for the appriopriate word. And remember, the wordlist tells you what part of speech the words are. (e.g. [n*] = noun) 4. If you really don't know the word from the list, you can use another appropriate word, for instance a synonym. Maybe* you'll get half a mark for your answer (if it's spellt correctly, of course). (* : Ask your teacher.) 5. HOWEVER, if we give you the first letter of the word, use it ! Don't come up with a word which isn't included in the wordlist ! And crossing out the first letter to write down another word won't help youeither ; P |

B. Building sentences 1. Build example sentences with the words that you think are difficult AT HOME. 2. Maybe some meanings or translations of English words aren't clear to you. Look up those words in an English-English dictionary (book, CD-rom, on line). You will find example sentences for the meaning which you don't understand. 3. Sometimes it is important to find out a bit more about a word, especially about verbs. EXAMPLES : _ to benefit from (unit 1) : WRONG : A lot of people have benefited the aspirin. CORRECT : A lot of people have benefited FROM the aspirin. _ to contemplate something (unit 2) : WRONG : The depressed woman contemplated about suicide. CORRECT : The depressed woman contemplated suicide. Sometimes you can find this information in the wordlist OR in your notes. Have a look in a dictionary if you're not sure. |

II. GRAMMAR 1. Read the Grammar Reference at the back of your Student's Book carefully. --> Look up the words you don't know. --> To understand a rule it is important to have a good look at the example ! 2. Do you want to have an overview of each Unit's Grammar Reference ? You will find it in the blue column in each unit. (e.g. unit 1 : SB p. 9 ; unit 2 : SB p. 20) Be careful, sometimes these overviews only talk about A PART of that unit's Grammar Reference. 3. Have another look at the exercises in the Workbook and at the homeworks. There may also be exercises in your Workbook which we didn't solve in class. You can solve them at home and ask your teacher to correct them. 4. The teachers have extra exercises for most grammatical items. |
