Here are a few pictures of the most important politicans in the USA.
Let's start with the President himself ...
George Walker Bush Jr. (left) is the 43rd President of the USA. His nickname is Dubya (= double u).
His father,
George Herbert Walker Bush Sr. (below), was also President of the USA, from 1988 to 1993. He was the leader of the CIA before he became Vice President and afterwards the 41st President of the USA.
Two parties
There are two important parties
in the USA : the
Republicans and the Democrates. The Bush family are all Republicans. Bill Clinton is an example of a Democrate.
What's the difference between them ? This is a bit difficult to explain. The parties are very big, so in each of them there are a lot of people who DON'T have the same views. In general you can say that the Republicans are a bit more conservative than the Democrates. The Republicans pay more attention to traditions, the Army, their own country (instead of the outside world) etc.
This President is criticized very often. Here are a few cartoons.
Here are a few other key members of the government.
Richard B. "Dick"
Cheney
, the Vice President. He was Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush Sr.
Condoleezza Rice, the National Security Advisor. She is a professor of political science.
Donald H. Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense. He has had this job once before. Collin Powell, Secretary of Defense.
The USA claimed independency in 1776. In the meantime, there have been quite a few Presidents. Some of them have become very famous, but actually, people today don't remember the majority of them. Here are the most well-known names. It's a bit sad when you think about it : most of them became famous :
                        a. because they were involved in an important
war.
                        b. because they caused a
scandal.
                        c. because they were
murdered.
As you can see, being a President is not easy. And if you do it REALLY well, people might even forget you've ever existed ...
George Washington (1789-1797), the first President.  He's the reason why the capital of the US is called Washington. He played an important role in the American Revolution, which led to the country's independence.
Theodore Roosevelt (1901 -1909), who had fought in the Spanish-American war, became the youngest President (at 43) up till then. He was a very active politician, who paid a lot of attention to the relationship with other countries.
Woodrow Wilson
(1913-1921), prohibited child labour. He won his 2nd election with the slogan "He kept us out of war" (= WW I) But afterwards, in 1917, he joined the allied forces, which definitely helped them win the war against Germany.
Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865), was President when the Civil War between the Union (= mostly northern states, all against slavery) and the Confederacy (= mostly southern states) started. He was shot in a theatre by an actor.
